The family left Mickleknox in 1769 and moved to the parish ot Twynholm in the Stewartry of Galloway, Scotland near Kirkcudbright, where they lived 5 years under Lord Selkirk.

In 1774 Robert, Nichola and their 6 children sailed from the mouth of the river Dee on the ship Golden Rule. It took 3 months and 4 days to arrive in New York. They went from Albany, NY through Manchester, VT, across the Green Mountains to Bromley, to Springfield, VT on the Connecticut River, where they remained 10 years.
