April 16, 1999 - Dark Clouds Gather

I spent most of yesterday looking at the sky darkening.  The wind had picked up and you could smell the rain in the air.  We are currently under drought conditions (the news last night showed the devestation in Port St. Lucie from brush fires - last year the worry was in Waldo, a city to the north of us), so while everyone else wants rain, I was hoping it would hold off until the mason poured the footer and it dried.

I got my wish.  The rain held off until about 6 PM this evening.  The mason managed to pour the footer yesterday and he and his crew starting laying the concrete blocks for the foundation today.

Once again, no students stuck around to see me after class, so I blasted out to the lot.  I snapped a few shots, then hung out with the Vahles for a bit.

The mason and crew need to finish the foundation, then we need termite treatment and another inspection, and then the plumber will have his turn.  After all that, we get a slab.  Probably the week after next, which is final exam week at Santa Fe.

The mason and his crew.  The black vertical objects are rebar, sticking up out of the cement footer.
The foundation along the right side of the house is done.  This makes sense as a starting point because it's the only wall without any doors or unusual features.
Another shot of the right side.  This is Sarah's room.
Another shot of the right side wall.  Normal height is 3 blocks.  We wanted 4 due to the bad flooding in our area last year.  Our builder seems to have forgotten about this.  He put in 4 because the health department requires us to have a mounded septic tank.  Long story.  I suspect we're going to have a nice long talk with our builder...
Can't be a construction site - these guys are working.  The dog too.
