SHANDS ARTS IN MEDICINE SURVEY RESULTS

During the summer of 2001, Santa Fe Community College, in collaboration with CAHRE, conducted a survey of hospitals in the Southeastern United States in order to begin to assess the need for artists trained to work in health care settings. The following results are preliminary and are based on replies from 60 respondents.

Totals are based on the number of responses to each question, and regarding each question as a separate instrument. Non-responses and "does not apply" responses are not factored into the totals.

  1. We have an arts related program
    64% have an arts related program

  2. We would like to have an arts related program
    78% would like to have an arts related program
    60% of those who said they do not have an arts related program, would like to have an arts related program

  3. We have original works of art in our facility
    82% have original works of art

  4. We have paid artists in our facility
    52% have paid artists
    96% of these artists are paid $7.51 or above
    4% of these artists are paid $7.50 or below

  5. We would like to employ artists in our facility
    59% would like to employ artists in their facility
    90% of the respondents would like to employ artists if finances were not an issue
    75% of the 41% who said they would not like to employ artists responded that this is due to financial constraints

  6. We would like to employ artists in the future
    83% would like to employ artists in the future

  7. We would like our patients to participate in creative activities
    89% said yes

  8. We have volunteer artists at this time
    57% have volunteer artists

  9. We recognize the value of art in a healing environment
    100% recognize the value of art in the healing environment
