The arts are now being used within healthcare institutions world-wide and the Arts in Medicine programs at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida is a national model for hospital artist-in-residence programs. The international arts in healing movement recognizes and advocates the role of the imagination and creative process in developing and maintaining health. In 1996, UF became the first university in the nation to offer a Dance in Medicine course including both classroom and clinical experiences. The success of this course prompted the establishment of the CAHRE Center in 1999 to formally link the academic and clinical arts communities.
