January 1999 Updates

January 3, 1999 - 5:15 pm

I have returned to Gainesville. It feels good to be back in civilization. I brought my Sega Genesis back with me with "Phantasy Star 3" and "Phantasy Star 4" so that Eric could play them. Unbeknown to me was the fact that Eric got a Genesis for Christmas. I was really amazed that my TV remember all the channels even though it was unplugged for two weeks. I love my television.

January 4, 1999 - 3:54 am

Misty and I just had two chat sessions that lasted from about 9:30 until around 3:30. There was only about a thirty minute break inbtween the two chat sessions. She dropped a very large bomb tonight. She thinks she loves me. This really confused me. I don't understand how she could love me without ever meeting me in person. In any event, we both opened up a lot as the conversation went on. By the end of the conversation, I felt a lot more at peace about the whole situation. We've both decided to just play things as they come. No matter what happens in the future, I can assure you that I'll be thinking of her.

January 4, 1999 - 10:20 am

Eric and I just had a minor problem with my third-party Playstation memory card. You see, it decided to erase some of our games. I lost all of my data for "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night", "Parasite Eve", "Parappa the Rapper", and "Brave Fencer Musashi". Basically, all I have left is my "Metal Gear Solid" and "Gameday 99" data. Today, I'm going to go buy an official Playstation memory card made by Sony. That way this won't happen again.

January 4, 1999 - 9:53 pm

I just got back from Pizza Hut with Eric, Allyson, Lisa, and Jason. On my way into the parking lot, a homeless man stopped me and said, "Don't blow me away with your 3-5-7. I just wanna get 52 cents so i can get a jalenpeno pepper for my pa." He was very drunk. I could smell it on his breath. I dug out my pocket change from my wallet and gave it to him - a little more than 75 cents worth. He was so happy that he thanked me and started hugging me. I hugged him back and told him that he was welcome and wished him a good night.

January 5, 1999 - 1:28 am

The whole thing with Misty is over. I told her tonight that I don't feel the same way about her that she does about me. It's funny. Here I am on the other side, being the deliverer of bad news, and I still feel just as terrible. The thing she said that hurt the most came near the end of the conversation. She said, "Thank you for showing me one more way that a heart can be broken." The last thing she said to me was "Now you sound like a counselor," and that's when I said, "Good night, Misty. Before I say anything else that's stupid, good night." That was the last thing I said. I hung up the phone after that. I'm worried about her. A lot. Those of you who pray, please pray for her.

January 5, 1999 - 5:24 pm

I'm going to be filming that segment for CNN. It all goes down tomorrow at around one. They want to film me here in the dorm room. This means that I'm going to have to clean things up around here. Of course, not everything in Rusty's life is quite so grand. This morning, I got an e-mail from Misty. It's very clear that our conversation hurt her a lot. I already knew that, but it still hurt to see the pain I had caused. Things would have been so much easier if I had only loved her back.

January 6, 1999 - 8:45 am

Last night, Eric and I went to Chili's and then to CD Warehouse. At CD Warehouse, I bought Disintegration. I think The Cure have joined Pearl Jam and Nirvana as one of my favorite bands of all time.

January 6, 1999 - 9:06 am

Last night, Misty sent me an e-mail that was just intentionally mean and hurtful. This morning I sent her an e-mail telling her that until she could move beyond this desire to be mean I didn't want to hear from her. Chalk up another failure for Rusty.

January 6, 1999 - 1:47 pm

The CNN camera crew just left. It was really cool. They just took shots of me in front of the computer basically. The reporter said that it should probably release on Friday. It will most likely air some time between 5:30 and 7:30. She told me that if I missed it or something to send her an e-mail about getting a copy. I'm going to be on television.

January 6, 1999 - 2:40 pm

I just fixed Jen's computer. She had some computer tech guy add some RAM to it over the holiday. The moron didn't secure it properly. Basically, I just popped open the case, pushed everything down into the slots, closed it up, and turned it back on. Another needless computer problem caused by lazy computer tech.

January 7, 1999 - 9:22 pm

I just got done playing an intense game of "Gameday 99". I came from behind as the Jacksonville Jaguars (of course) against the Baltimore Ravens. I was all like "Yes!" and stuff. How typically male of me. I should go watch "An Affair to Remember" and talk about my feelings so that I can counteract this shamefully male display.

January 7, 1999 - 10:26 pm

I just designed my new door sign for the semester. It has a picture of Sailor Moon on it this time. The unfortunate problem with it, however, was that it was too big for my printer to handle. I lacked the printer memory to print it all at once. I had to print all the text boxes out and then print the picture of Sailor Moon on the page separately. Nevertheless, it looks pretty darn cool.

January 8, 1999 - 11:06 pm

For some reason, CNN didn't air the ISIS segment tonight. I'm not a national celebrity yet.

January 9, 1999 - 7:03 pm

Today, I got a new Hello Kitty wallet. It's bright red and has Hello Kitty and little teddy bears on it. It's really cute. I carry it proudly, very secure in my masculinity. My other wallet had a giant hole in it. I also got two Sailor Moon videotapes from Toys R Us.

January 10, 1999 - 9:33 pm

This morning, I beat "Final Fantasy 6" again. Immediately after, I started playing "Final Fantasy 4" (2 here in the US). I also mailed out a humorous list of reasons why "Jesus Was Gother Than You". I found it this morning while surfing the Net and decided to mail it to people. If you wanted a copy of it but didn't get one, then just e-mail me and ask for it.

January 10, 1999 - 9:57 pm

I just can't shake this down feeling that I've had all day. Actually, I think it started sometime Friday night. I'm falling into one of those "I'm-so-lonely" moods again. Well, really I'm already there. I think something Jen told me a while back sums up my predicament nicely: " i think you wanted more than just a girl who would be proud to call you her boyfriend. you wanted it to be someone who you liked in return. silly, don't you know that is a Big thing to ask?" I come to believe more each day that it is an impossible thing to ask. Only three girls have ever liked me in a romantic way. Michelle, my friend from high school who didn't tell me until it was too late. Robin, a girl who became infatuated with me right before I left for college. Misty, my most recent crush/failure. You might notice that this list doesn't coincide with the list of people I've mentioned who I've been attracted to. What's wrong with me? Am I asking for too much out of life? All of you out there who have a significant other to share your life with, please do me a favor. Hold them close, kiss them (on the lips if you like), and never forget how lucky you are.

January 12, 1999 - 9:40 am

I made a big vat of chili last night. The only way I know how to make chili is to make a lot of chili. I will now be eating chili for the next few days.

January 12, 1999 - 1:07 pm

I just ordered a Sailor Moon t-shirt and coloring book from an Internet anime site. I can't wait until it gets here.

January 12, 1999 - 6:18 pm

I'm getting a Game Enhancer for my Playstation. It will enable me to play Japanese games on my Playstation without the need to pop it open, thereby voiding my warranty. Perhaps I'll get that Sailor Moon import game when I actually have money.

January 13, 1999 - 8:57 am

My heart feels so heavy this morning.

January 14, 1999 - 10:14 am

My "Final Fantasy 4" (2 US) cartridge did a very mean thing this morning. I turned it on just now and started playing where I had saved my game last night. Suddenly, the whole screen went blank, and I had to press the reset button. When I tried to start the game back up again, all of my saved data was gone. I had been playing the game for about ten hours at this point. Now I don't even know whether to start over or not. I have no guarantee that my cartridge won't just lose my data again. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't video games supposed to be fun?

January 14, 1999 - 8:32 pm

I just found another reason to like the folks at Rhino Video Games. I took my "Final Fantasy 4" cartridge back to them and explained the situation. I didn't have the receipt. The guy at the counter looked at me and said, "Well, we're not supposed to exchange it without a receipt but..." and then he gave me another copy. It was quite cool of him. I also found the first episode of Sailor Moon on video at Toys R Us tonight.

January 16, 1999 - 10:18 am

I just got back from eating breakfast with my parents at Cracker Barrel here in Gainesville. They were on their way to Winter Haven to visit my Granny Haskell. On the way back to the dorm, I saw that someone had hit a cute little squirrel with their car, killing the poor guy. It upset me. If I ever hit an animal, I'm positive that I would just break down and start crying. I think there should be a law requiring any driver who hits an animal to get out and bury the creature that they just killed. Those who chose to ignore the law would be charged a hefty fine - somewhere between five-hundred and one-thousand dollars. Maybe that would cause the drivers to watch out for animals a little better than they are now.

January 17, 1999 - 1:21 pm

I rented "Final Fantasy Tactics" this weekend and fell in love with the game. Unfortunately, the time has come to return it. I think I'm going to go into withdrawl.

January 17, 1999 - 3:21 pm

To cushion the blow of returning "Final Fantasy Tactics" to Blockbuster, I got two more Sailor Moon videos. I think I'm addicted.

January 18, 1999 - 9:04 pm

Jason, Eric, and I just went to Rafferty's, a new steakhouse here in Gainesville. We had the best service I've ever had in my life. I took drinks out of my glass, and the server immediately brought me a new glass. I wish I had been financially able to give the guy a greater tip.

January 20, 1999 - 3:38 am

I just beat "Final Fantasy 4". I stayed up until now, trying to beat it so I could play my very own copy of "Final Fantasy Tactics" that I bought this evening. I would say that the ending to FF4 is the best ending of any Final Fantasy game I've played thus far. You get to actually find out what the characters do after they beat the source of all evil. This lack of resolution was my main gripe about the ending to FF6 (3 US). Now I get to go to sleep so I can make it to class and work tomorrow.

January 21, 1999 - 9:30 am

I was just awakened by a credit card insurance company just now. For the low price of 89 cents per $100 on my creditcard, I could have it insured against job loss and death. I told him twice that I didn't want it. What I really want is to go back to bed, but I can't do that. Once I'm awakened, it's extremely hard for me to go back to sleep.

January 21, 1999 - 9:19 pm

I just had one of the top five steaks I've ever had in my life. Jason, George, Richard, and I went to Hops, a new steakhouse here in Gainesville. I got the Jamaican Sirloin, steak marinated in pineapple, soy, and ginger. It was amazing. I simply cannot say enough good things about this steak. If you live in Gainesville, just go there. Eat the steak, and maybe—just maybe—you will understand.

January 22, 1999 - 5:25 pm

Some more of my scholarship money came in today. It's is a joyous day. Now if my Game Enhancer and Sailor Moon stuff that I ordered would just get here, I'd be overjoyed.

January 23, 1999 - 12:19 am

I just got to pet a kitty! As Jason and I were heading back from the car, we met a kitty. He was quite friendly to me. He just came up and started rubbing all over my legs. I bolted upstairs to find him something to eat. Finally, Eric let me have a piece of lunchmeat. I took it back downstairs and gave it to the kitty. He was very appreciative. I promised to get him some cat food the next time I go to the store. In other news, tonight we went to Maude's Coffee House. It was really nice. I had a double mocha latte and a Jerry Lee Lewis (chocolate cheesecake with mocha topping and chocolate syrup). Amazing stuff and overall an excellent evening.

January 23, 1999 - 4:22 pm

Jason and I went to Ocala today. If you ever think to yourself "Gee, I should go to Ocala," stop that line of thought right there. There's nothing in Ocala. You know that part of the city that's right before where you're actually going? All of Ocala is like that. Unfortunately, there's no there for you to be going to. I found one cool thing in the entire city - a Sailor Moon SuperS wall scroll. However, it was twenty dollars, and I just couldn't convince myself to buy it.

January 25, 1999 - 1:40 am

Jason and I just got back from Jacksonville. We went to see The Vandals over at the Milk Bar. It was the first show at the Milk Bar's new location. This time the air conditioning worked! It was a pretty good show even though the opening bands (Longfellow and Against All Authority) really weren't good at all. A few of the high points of the show were punk covers of "Baby Got Back" (by Sir Mix-a-Lot) and "Summer Dreams" (from Grease). At one point in the show, a girl in the balcony decided to take her top off. The band decided to point this out to the audience. Furthermore, they called for a spotlight. The Vandals were really great in concert.

January 26, 1999 - 11:53 am

Last night, I got more Sailor Moon videos. This time, I got a boxed set of the entire Doom Tree series - about four-and-a-half hours of Sailor Scout action. I've only watched four of the thirteen episodes (one video tape) thus far. I intend to watch more this evening. In case you were wondering, I'm officially a lamer now.

January 26, 1999 - 9:03 pm

I just did my laundry. I hate doing my laundry. I hate everything related to laundry. I think Jason and I are going to get dessert now. Then, I'll either play "Final Fantasy Tactics" or watch Sailor Moon.

January 27, 1999 - 8:49 am

I was awakened at eight o'clock this morning by a telemarketer who wanted me to apply for a credit card. I just said, "No. I don't want one," and plopped back on my bed. I refuse to buy anything from someone who wakes me up before ten o'clock.

January 27, 1999 - 8:47 pm

I hate University of Florida athletics. I'm parked illegally outside of my own dorm because there's a basketball game tonight. From now on, if someone asks, "Do you like the Gators?" my answer is going to be "No." If someone asks, "Do you think the Gators will win the national championship this year?" the appropriate response will be "I hope not. I hate them." I want a license to carry a bat and beat the living crap out of cars that are parked illegally on game days. In happier news, I finally got my Game Enhancer in the mail. It's pretty cool. I should get an import game to really try it out.

January 28, 1999 - 11:57 pm

I just finished watching my Sailor Moon Doom Tree series. It was really good. The ending made the entire series. The only problem now is that I want to watch the rest of the episodes that followed this one. The unfortunate thing is that, to my knowledge, they haven't been released in The States. I just need to learn Japanese, I suppose.

January 30, 1999 - 1:08 am

The gang and I again voyaged to Maude's Coffee House this evening. As before, the coffee was great. Afterwards, Jason, George, and I rented "Jack Frost", a crappy grade-b movie about a snowman that kills people. If your local video store doesn't have a copy, I suggest you demand that they order it now. That movie totally sucks.

January 30, 1999 - 1:43 am

I just beat "Tekken 3". I was playing as Eddy. I break danced people to death. It was fun.

January 30, 1999 - 8:56 am

I'm very confused about where my roommate is. He wasn't here when I got home. I would suppose that he went home or something if he had actually turned off his computer instead of just setting an away message for AOL IM and turning the monitor off. I'm even more confused because I could have sworn that Allyson and Lisa were going home with Jen for her birthday this weekend. I don't know who he'd be hanging out with.

January 30, 1999 - 10:50 am

I just beat "Tekken 3" again - this time with Forest Law.

January 31, 1999 - 5:07 pm

Jason and I just got back from getting snacks for the Super Bowl. I don't really like the Falcons, but I hate the Broncos. I want them to lose badly. While I was out, I picked up the Sega Genesis Power Base Converter, allowing me to play Sega Master System games on my Genesis. I also got "Night Trap", the game that got Congress all upset way back when. I got both of these treasures for less than twenty bucks. I remember a day when these items were cutting edge and you had to pay a lot of money to own them. On the way home, we saw a rainbow. It was just the coolest.
