August 1998 Updates

August 1, 1998 - 12:31 pm

Lately I've had the urge to make a page of song lyrics that have meant something to me or that I just plain like. However, I face a couple of problems. Firstly, there are already so many sites out there where you can find accurate lyrics for almost any band you can imagine. Secondly, I don't want to totally rip Eric's idea. If (when?) I do this page, I've got to make it totally my own.

August 1, 1998 - 8:57 pm

I discovered today that all students at the University of Florida are allowed to use McAfee VirusScan free of charge under the university's licensing agreement. You can download your totally legal registered copy from the UF Soda Shoppe. This message was brought to you by the Nine Finger Monarchy Computer Services Division.

August 1, 1998 - 9:34 pm

I've been reading about marriage proposals on the Internet. Some of them are really cute. I just don't know why I do this sort of thing to myself though. I guess because in addition to being a paranoid pessimist I'm also a hopeless romantic.

August 2, 1998 - 3:07 pm

"Happily Ever After" is finally finished. I just posted the final section to the site.

August 2, 1998 - 6:17 pm

I just discovered how to make Visual Basic play MIDI files. I'm quite proud of myself.

August 2, 1998 - 9:57 pm

I got to chat with Lisa today for the first time in a long time. I really enjoy her company.

August 4, 1998 - 5:32 pm

I went to the eye doctor today and found out that I have all sorts of fun astigmatism. I am getting contacts though. Actually, I guess I should say contact since I'll only be wearing one. It seems that the two types of astigmatism I have in my right eye cancel each other out giving me nearly perfect vision. Amazingly, my new contact won't be those hard gas-permeable things either. They will be soft contacts specifically designed for people with astigmatism.

August 4, 1998 - 9:55 pm

I just added 32 MB of RAM to my computer, upping the total to 64. Things are much smoother (and quieter since I don't access hard drive as much). Also, those bizarre problems I was having with Final Fantasy 7 on the second disc mysteriously disappeared. In light of this paired with similar observations from Eric, I think Eidos Interactive should have listed 64 MB of RAM under the system requirements instead of 32 MB. I shouldn't be on for the rest of the evening, though. At least not consistently. You see, I've got a three to five page paper for my Developmental Psychology class due tomorrow. I will have Outlook open and checking e-mail every minute though so feel free to e-mail me.

August 5, 1998 - 9:22 pm

I had nachos tonight. Nachos are good.

August 6, 1998 - 5:33 pm

Today was the last day that I got to send Lisa her daily "welcome-to-work-and-have-a-great-day" e-mail because it was her last day at her job for this summer. I don't know what I'm going to do myself this evening. Study harder for my psych exam tomorrow, I guess...

August 7, 1998 - 11:41 am

I just got in from my developmental psychology test. I had the most pleasant experience as I was turning in my exam. The professor seemed like he wanted to say something to me so I stopped. He checked the name on my exam to make sure that he had the right person, and then he said, "That paper you did was very good." I was totally blown away by this because I thought the paper was kind of lousy. I mummured thanks, and he responded with, "Best one I saw." Maybe I really do have a chance to get a B in that class.

August 8, 1998 - 11:17 am

I'm just about to disconnect the computer to move it over to my temporary housing in Yulee Hall. There's a DHNet port in my room, and I think that with the new system of assigning IP addresses I should be able to use it. That, however, is in no way certain. Guess I'll have to see when I get there.

August 9, 1998 - 7:50 pm

I'm going to see Pearl Jam!!! I just ordered tickets for the September 23 show in West Palm Beach. This is going to rock! Yeah! Rock! Missing out on the Atlanta show just makes this that much sweeter. Of course, I'll feel much better when I actually get the tickets in the mail, but still...Pearl Jam! Woooo! And that's not it. I stopped by the psychology building on the way back to the dorm. I got an A on the final and a B for the semester - a minor miracle after that abysmal first test. Also, I've got DHNet access over here in Yulee Hall. Now, if Lisa would come online and chat with me, I think I would just blow up right here at my desk.

August 9, 1998 - 9:03 pm

I just added new quote to the Quotes Page. It's about Barbie.

August 11, 1998 - 8:12 pm

I got my contact today during my lunch break. It took me about ten minutes to actually get the thing in my eye. Then, about every thirty seconds for the next fifteen minutes or so, my left eye would yell, "Dude! There's something in me! Get it out! Quickly!" Now I'm still aware of the fact that it's in my eye, but it doesn't bother me at all. Everyone tells me that after a while I won't even notice that much. I just hope that I'll be able to get it out of my eye tonight without a major incident.

August 11, 1998 - 10:35 pm

I succeeded in removing my contact lens after only five minutes of work. While I was in the shower, I had a strange thought. My first name (which no one uses with the exception of the United States government and educational officials) is Jonathan. I am a member of a Southern Baptist church. Given these facts, I could rather accurately refer to myself as John the Baptist. I wonder how strangely people would look at me if I insisted they refer to me in that manner.

August 14, 1998 - 6:25 pm

I just overhauled the sounds page. There are new sounds for you to enjoy. I especially like "Star Trek: Ping Pong". Listen and enjoy. I'm going home for the rest of the evening to pick up some stuff I need to move to Gainesville.

August 15, 1998 - 10:35 pm

Today at Wal-Mart, I found a flatbed scanner for $88 with a thirty-dollar rebate. I quickly bought this scanner for my own fiendish web-publishing and desktop-decoration purposes. Of course, I have yet to play with it because I'm in the process of packing up all of my belongings for transport to East Hall, my home for two years now.

August 16, 1998 - 12:25 pm

I am once again back in East Hall, room 324. I'm mostly settled in, but I'm currently waiting for my dad to arrive with my computer table so I can set up all of my computer goodies. Specifically, I'd like to play with my new scanner which I haven't even taken out of the box. It's good to be home again.

August 18, 1998 - 7:45 am

I don't feel very hopeful today.

August 18, 1998 - 5:18 pm

I just got in from work, and I had Lisa-mail! This provoked the Happy Rusty Dance. I also went to the eye doctor today. He told me that I was allergic to the solution I've been using to clean my contact lens. He also said that when my more permanent lenses come in I'll be able to see much better. In other news, I'm thinking of compiling a list of reasons why I suck and putting it on the Rusty page.

August 18, 1998 - 6:08 pm

I think I'm going to take a happy nap. I'm kind of tired. Getting up early to go to work does that to you. Feel free to ring me here at the room though. I'll get up and talk to you.

August 18, 1998 - 11:12 pm

I just got back from Maui Teryaki. Lisa was there. (!!) It was fun. Lisa smelled nice. I also got to hear the long-awaited "Lisa's wisdom tooth" story. It was a good story. Lisa told it. I had a chicken bowl, but I didn't really eat a lot of it because I kept forgetting that I should be eating. Did I mention that Lisa was there?

August 19, 1998 - 10:14 pm

I suck.

August 20, 1998 - 6:57 am

I had allergy problems last night. My nose was all stuffed up, and periodically I would sneeze. I certainly hope that I wasn't snoring because of it. That can be very annoying.

August 20, 1998 - 9:48 pm

I'm chatting with Lisa. This is the highlight of my day. Of course, it always is. The runner-up for today would be Jen and Allyson blessing me with chocolate shortly after I made and consumed dinner.

August 21, 1998 - 7:26 pm

I just ran into my first-year roommate Danny. He got a haircut. His long, blonde tresses have been reduced to hair as short as mine. He's taking a year off to do that AmeriCorp student service thing. Today at work, I got to train a new hire to run the switchboard. It felt really neat to realize that I knew my job well enough to train someone else.

August 21, 1998 - 7:41 pm

I forgot to mention that I got very creative with my e-mail to Lisa today.

August 21, 1998 - 10:59 pm

I just figured out how to do my object-oriented version of Random Poetry Generator. I had hit a major snag when I came to the realization that Visual Basic wouldn't allow public arrays in classes. I'm working around that by adding readable/writable properties to the class that set and get the values indexed in the private class-level array. Hooray for me.

August 22, 1998 - 11:54 am

Last night, I added two new pictures of me to the images page.

August 22, 1998 - 1:07 pm

I just spent nearly an hour and a half debugging the new object-oriented version of Random Poetry Generator. It turns out that the problem was very simple. Instead of typing the variable (correctly) as "CarriageReturnDecision", I typed "CarrriageReturnDecision". I felt stupid.

August 23, 1998 - 1:13 am

This evening, Jason and I watched "Clerks" with some of Eric's friends. After the movie ended, Lisa came over (Yay!!!) and we all watched "Mystery Science Theatre 2000". Lisa was laying on my bed. Now my bed smells all nice. In case I haven't made it readily apparent, I like Lisa. I therefore like it a lot when she comes over.

August 23, 1998 - 12:21 pm

Jason just gave me my very own Hello Kitty doll. It's really cool. I sing his praises. I also just beat "Final Fantasy 7". It had a very nice ending. Much better than FF6's ending, which kind of disappointed me.

August 23, 1998 - 3:44 pm

I just got back from town. When I was at the Dollar Tree, I bought a children's book called The Little Goat. I bought this book primarily because it was called The Little Goat and because it had a picture of a little goat on the cover.

August 25, 1998 - 1:29 pm

I think I'm going to like my Theatre class. We get to actually act out plays and stuff. My cultural studies class isn't nearly as entertaining, but strangely Tyson's sister Priscilla is in that class. I also heard from Tara Lowe, a friend of mine from high school. I guess the past shows up just when you're not even thinking about it at all.

August 26, 1998 - 8:13 am

I think I might be able to catch a fish today, but I don't need to catch a fish. Something about the way the lake is perfectly still. Something about the way the coke bottles didn't clink together when I took a drink. Something about the way the rod was perfectly balanced when I picked it up in my hand. Something about the way it was light as a feather when I cast it. I think I might be able to catch a fish today, but I don't need to catch a fish.

August 26, 1998 - 7:02 pm

I just spent about $120 on books for school, and I didn't even buy them all. I'm also sneezing a lot. Those two points are unrelated.

August 27, 1998 - 7:47 am

Yet another person from my past has turned up by e-mail. Jean Williams, a young woman I knew in high school, e-mailed me last night. In other news that I failed to mention yesterday, I got really creative with yesterday's message to Lisa. I programmed it using Visual Basic and Microsoft Agent. Yes, I do have a lot of time on my hands.

August 27, 1998 - 1:57 pm

If I have to sit in one more English class where all the students moan about the evils of technology, I think I'll scream. Personally, I see technology (and the Internet in particular) as an inclusive force that allows for the dissemination of ideas that would normally be excluded. Take this web site for example. I can't think of very much on the site that would be considered publishable by any publishing company, and I don't have the money to publish it myself in convential media. However, on this site, I have the opportunity to put whatever I deem fit for publication. End of technology rant.

August 27, 1998 - 3:01 pm

I've decided to skip my nap and drive to Jasper to visit with the folks instead. I'll be back sometime later this evening.

August 27, 1998 - 9:18 pm

Since 3:00, I have driven nearly 250 miles. I'm tired of being in the car.

August 28, 1998 - 11:13 am

I got paid today. Getting paid is good.

August 28, 1998 - 9:47 pm

I just got back from dinner. I had dinner with Lisa. I was chatting with her on AOL Instant Messenger, and we started talking about how we were both hungry. She mentioned that she and Allyson had decided not to cook tonight. I invited her to dinner. After much discussion and anguish, Lisa, Allyson, Jen, Eric, Jason, and I decided to go to Bennigan's. I sat next to Lisa and had a bacon Swiss burger. During the meal, Lisa made one of those cool little jumping origami frogs. I, of course, was thoroughly entertained by this. This was because, as I've said before, I like Lisa.

August 29, 1998 - 9:13 am

Last night, Randy, Eric, and I decided to watch "Army of Darkness" because Jason and I had never seen it. It was quite funny. Today, I really think I should clean up this horrid pig sty that I live in. Of course should and will are totally different things.

August 29, 1998 - 8:16 pm

I had a good, long, serious coversation with Lisa today. By the end of the conversation, I was just as confused as before we talked; but it was a good confused. After the conversation, Jason and I went to Baskin-Robbins (31 flavors!). I had a quadruple chocolate waffle cone. I needed the chocolate. It didn't make me any less confused, but it sure made things more chocolatey.

August 30, 1998 - 12:45 am

Today was such a roller coaster ride. The funny thing about roller coasters, though, is that you end up right where you began.

August 30, 1998 - 1:22 pm

Today was Communion Sunday at church today. It never ceases to amaze me how much different a large church is from a small church. In other news, I've added that list of reasons why I suck to the Rusty Page.

August 31, 1998 - 7:21 am

I am so tired.

August 31, 1998 - 8:02 am

I just took a really long shower, and now I feel almost human.

August 31, 1998 - 1:43 pm

I'm so confused that my head hurts. I showed up at Anderson Hall, room 210 at 12:45 for my 12:50 religion course. When I arrived there, I sat down and began to notice that I didn't see any familiar faces in the room. Then, when the professor arrived, he looked nothing like the fellow I had seen and talked to on the first day of class. This confused me a great deal, and I hastily made a beeline out of the room. After I had already left, it occured to me that this guy might have been a guest lecturer. However, that wouldn't exactly account for the lack of familiar faces amongst the students. I'm almost certain that I was in the right room. I would feel pretty stupid if that was actually the problem.

August 31, 1998 - 2:04 pm

My instructor just e-mailed me and told me that the course had indeed moved to a different building. My brain doesn't hurt quite so much now.
