July 1998 Updates

July 1, 1998 - 10:02 am

Network access went down again last night. However, it seems to be back now. Gatorlink decided to taunt me today. I had sent Lisa an e-mail last night so she could read it at work this morning. I was fairly certain that I would have a message from Lisa when I got up this morning. However, Gatorlink just said, "Connecting..." over and over again. Finally, I left the room and came back. I looked at my screen, and there was my e-mail from Lisa. There are times when I swear that computers have a sense of humor.

July 1, 1998 - 5:27 pm

I just got in from work. I think I'm going to play Final Fantasy 7 for a while. I should be online around seven if anyone has a desire to chat with me on ICQ or AOL Instant Messenger.

July 1, 1998 - 6:32 pm

Well, I didn't quite get around to playing Final Fantasy 7, but I did finally add/link to the newest page on the site Random Kibbles and Miscellaneous Gibblets. I have yet to add it to the QuickLink bars on the site, though, and it also doesn't have it's own QuickLink bar yet.

July 2, 1998 - 12:23 am

I guess no one's coming online tonight. Sigh...

July 6, 1998 - 10:11 am

When I was a kid, I had a little furry hamster named Nester. Nester did all sorts of little hamster things. She loved raisins. You could give Nester a raisin, and she would stuff it into her cheeks. After a few raisins, life would become difficult for Nester. Her cheeks would be stuffed, but she wouldn't leave until you stopped giving her raisins because she thought she's miss out on some raisins. This story is only relevant for one reason: I feel kind of like Nester must have with her mouth stuffed with raisins. You see, I'm teething, and my gums are swollen. I cut a wisdom tooth Friday evening, and it has made my life miserable since. Tylenol has been my friend. I just hope I don't have to go get it cut out. That would be bothersome.

July 6, 1998 - 9:19 pm

I just read my really nice e-mail from Lisa for about the billionth time. It still made me grin and feel all warm inside.

July 7, 1998 - 9:27 am

Someone actually subscribed to the Wacky News Wire from the web page. I was shocked.

July 12, 1998 - 5:36 pm

My web server was down for several days. Sorry about any inconvenience this caused any of you. It wasn't my fault. I promise.

July 13, 1998 - 5:27 pm

I had a strong desire to listen to Revolver when I got in from work. Unfortunately, my CD wasn't in its case. Apparently, I left it in my CD carrier at home. I opted to listen to The Cure's Boys Don't Cry instead. My developmental psychology test didn't go so well today. Actually it went quite badly, but that's okay because I got two e-mails from Lisa today!

July 14, 1998 - 5:29 pm

Umm...I'm really wet right now. I just walked home from work in torrential rains. I think I'll take a shower and put on dry clothes now.

July 16, 1998 - 12:33 pm

I decided to wear my plaid Mickey Mouse tie today. I haven't worn it in a very long time.

July 16, 1998 - 8:42 pm

I cooked dinner tonight. It was kind of like stir fry but not really. I started out by heating some low-fat butter substitute in my frying pan. To this simmering dairy, I added some fresh green onions. After unleashing the flavors latent within the onions, I added some stir fry cuts of beef. I browned the beef for a few minutes, and then I added the soy sauce—about one-quarter of a bottle, I would estimate. I let the beef simmer in the soy sauce. When it was done, I put on some rice to boil. While the rice was boiling, I began simmering some green onions in my frying pan again. To the simmering onions, I added some fresh mushrooms and broccoli. I also added some soy sauce...another quarter of a bottle. I let the veggies simmer in the soy sauce while the rice took on a rice-like consistency. I mixed the beef with the veggies and finally served the whole thing over rice. It was awesome. I had a lot of leftovers though. Guess I'll have them tomorrow. Later in the evening, as I was hanging out in the communal bathroom, one of the fellows on the floor asked me where I learned to cook like that. I told him that I just kind of learned from my mom. He had wondered if I were a professional chef or something. I guess I found that flattering.

July 16, 1998 - 11:13 pm

I just added two poems to the Poetry Corner—"Epilogue to a Nightmare" and "On Earrings and the Stoppage of Pus". Read and enjoy.

July 17, 1998 - 11:04 am

You can press the Send and Receive button in your e-mail program as often as you like, but it still doesn't generate e-mail.

July 19, 1998 - 12:06 am

I just had the most delightful conversation with Lisa. She asked me what qualities she has to offer her friends. Five or ten minutes later, I stopped myself. I could have gone on for quite some time because Lisa is just that great and I like her a great deal.

July 19, 1998 - 5:11 pm

I just completely revamped The Rusty Page. Now you have several options for getting to know more about me. (Don't worry. The third-person essay is still there.)

July 19, 1998 - 5:31 pm

I really wish we got HBO in the dorms. "To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday" came on at 5:15, and I adore that movie. If you have HBO, watch it for me and e-mail me about how good it was.

July 19, 1998 - 8:22 pm

I watched "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" on TNT instead. Now I think I'll color. I'm pretty messed up.

July 20, 1998 - 8:53 am

I just thought of a fun phrase: "the liquid way to start your day". Doesn't that sound like a commercial? Of course, at the time I was thinking about a morning shower, but it could also be applied to coffee, juice, or - if you're a drunk - that first bourbon or beer of the morning.

July 21, 1998 - 7:25 pm

I got an e-mail from Katie, my ex-girlfriend and high school friend, today. It was really nice to hear from her. I've always felt guilty about not keeping in touch. I just got done chatting on AOL Instant Messenger with her and her sister Mary. It was fun.

July 22, 1998 - 5:34 pm

No e-mail. Bummer.

July 23, 1998 - 5:27 pm

The only e-mail I got today was from Microsoft. They really like me. I don't have anything to drink here either, which means I'll have to go to the store. I don't feel like going anywhere, but I certainly feel like having something to drink. Why must life be so hard?

July 23, 1998 - 8:14 pm

I just added four new quotes to the Quotes Page.

July 24, 1998 - 12:39 pm

Have you ever felt like something really important was just slipping through your fingers and you were powerless to prevent it?

July 24, 1998 - 5:34 pm

I'm off to Jasper for the next couple of days. I'll be babysitting my five-year-old nephew this evening. I'll probably be back by Saturday eveving.

July 26, 1998 - 7:45 pm

This evening, I'm studying for my Developmental Psychology test tomorrow. I will be appearing online occasionally for extremely short periods of time (i.e. "study breaks"), most often between chapters. Because my e-mail program is still checking automatically every five minutes, that is the best way to reach me. If you have a need (or merely a strong desire) to talk to me, send me an e-mail and hang around for a bit. I'll get your e-mail and either reply to it or pop online to talk to you.

July 26, 1998 - 9:42 pm

Out of a hatred for the glare of dormitory lights and a desire to escape the sounds of "Starcraft", I am moving my study session to the library. Go ahead and e-mail me if you need me, but don't expect a rapid response.

July 27, 1998 - 12:28 pm

I just got out of my developmental psychology test. I think I did amazingly well on it. Of course, because of sleep deprivation, I also think that broccoli is sentient. By the time I get out of work, I'll probably be little more than an animated corpse.

July 27, 1998 - 7:43 pm

I changed the status bar message on the main page from "Je est an autre" (a quote from Arthur Rimbaud) to "Rip it all to shreds and let it go" - a line from the Garbage song "When I Grow Up" off of Version 2.0. It really spoke to my existence, and I thought it was sound advice.

July 28, 1998 - 12:32 pm

I removed my quote from the quote page and added a quote from Robert Smith.

July 29, 1998 - 10:08 pm

I slept on the floor last night. This was because I had so many visitors. You see, Jason and Richard came to visit. They needed a place to crash before venturing off to OzzFest later today. You know...the floor isn't so bad as it's made out to be. We rented the "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" movie, which was incredibly long but funny. In other humorous news, Burger King just called me back and offered me that job I applied for a while back. I told them that I already had a nice job. In fact, my job is so great that my supervisor is currently trying to figure out how to keep me working there without violating the budget. She has already told me that she wants me to work full-time between the semester change. Of course, I can only do that if our HR person can get my classification changed to allow me to work more than 20 hours in a week.

July 29, 1998 - 6:21 pm

I had chicken with broccoli from China Express tonight for dinner. The fortune in my fortune cookie read, "Love is in your future." Now if I could only believe that...

July 30, 1998 - 9:50 pm

Five Star pizza is joy in a box.

July 31, 1998 - 1:05 am

I got kind of creative with Lisa's e-mail tonight. I hope she enjoys it.

July 31, 1998 - 9:36 pm

I'm going into town to get some chocolate and goof around for a while. I'll be online later though.

July 31, 1998 - 10:48 pm

I just had a strange thought while I was out getting my chocolate fix. M and M's are a digital candy. I say this because you eat them in discrete bundles. You don't say, "I think I'll have five grams of M and M's." Instead, you describe M and M's in terms of quantity with one piece of candy as the base measure.
