June 1998 Updates

June 3, 1998 - 12:00 am

I saw a production of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" tonight for my Theatre Appreciation class. Overall, it was a nice experience. I'll have to adopt that play as one of the few things Shakespeare wrote that I like.

June 4, 1998 - 8:54 am

Well, I've installed Internet Explorer 4.0 again, and I have yet to get a Windows Protection Error. At this point, I've got all of my software re-installed with the exception of Outlook 98. I also got another interview today. This one's at the registrar's office doing office work. (That's why I'm up at this ungodly hour. My prospective employer wanted to reach me before I went to class.) However, I have no experience with office work; and, for the next two weeks, I'm unable to work in the four hour blocks required. In spite of these drawbacks, the lady doing the hiring seems to think we might be able to work something out. I would much rather work in an office than at Burger King. I would be working four hours a day on weekdays. That just sounds ideal to me. I really want this job.

June 5, 1998 - 9:07 am

I just got a job! It's the one in the registrar's office that I interviewed for yesterday. My main job will be answering and routing calls, but I also might get to do some data entry. I start on Monday at 9:30. For the rest of Summer A, I'll be working 9:30-10:30 and then 2:00-5:00 in the afternoons. I can't believe that...a job with a fixed schedule--and it's a day job! When Summer B rolls around, I'll re-design my schedule so I can work in a four hour block. I'm so happy that I think I'll get a shower and go to my "Theatre Appreciation" class at 11:00.

June 7, 1998 - 6:21 pm

I just got back from Jasper. I spent the weekend hanging out with my mom, my dad, and my five-year-old nephew. I let my nephew play my Street Fighter II for my Sega Genesis. It was the first video game he had ever played, and I quickly became the best uncle in the whole world.

June 7, 1998 - 9:27 pm

I just got another Windows Protection Error, but this time I defeated it using the secret computer ninja powers granted to me by Microsoft's Support Web Site. It seems that the real-mode version of Scandisk was violating my computer in the most primal of ways. It abused the DOS version of my CD-ROM driver so severely that Windows 95 refuses to play with it anymore. I have subsequently REMmed out the offending CD-ROM driver, and now I'm living a more positive life.

June 8, 1998 - 5:33 pm

I just got in from work about fifteen minutes ago. I finally have a job that I don't hate doing, and they still pay me for it. What a concept! On my way home, I saved a worm from certain death on a scorching sidewalk. All in all, it has been a pretty nice day—except for my e-mail. I can't seem to connect to my Gatorlink account. Is anyone else having any problems with the Gatorlink server?

June 12, 1998 - 12:49 pm

I received the nicest e-mail this morning from Langdon Foss about Henry, my now departed feline companion. (You can read about Henry and look at a couple pictures of him on the images page.) May Langdon and his cat Molly have many more days of happiness together.

June 12, 1998 - 10:37 pm

I just got back from the theatre. I saw a production of "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off". I always love going to the theatre. The whole experience just kind of draws me in. In fact, I love the general experience of going out of my room and doing something. It's the aftermath that bothers me. At the end of the event, I have to walk out into the night alone. As I'm heading out, I see the couples with their arms around each other, talking about what they've just seen. "I really liked the song near the end of the first act." "Oh, you had to love the costumes!" "The director's concept was simply brilliant." I left the theatre and decided to take a walk. The walk didn't help my mood much. I stopped by Subway on my way back home and got some chocolate chip cookies. They were very good, but chocolate is not a substitute for the love of a nice young lady.

June 13, 1998 - 7:18 pm

I just won a round of Quake deathmatch on Evil Eva. When I came on the server, the leader had ten frags already. I got on and decimated the competition. I finished with 21 and that guy had 13. I guess that's what playing against reaper bots for weeks does to your Quake game.

June 13, 1998 - 11:49 pm

I just got back from seeing "The Object of My Affection" at the $1.50 theatre. Sadly, this was another "Best Friend's Wedding". I loved the movie. I just wanted it to end differently. However, because it didn't end the way I wanted, it was more like real life. In fact, Allyson and I discussed this very thing on AOL Instant Messenger one day. Real life isn't always a happy ending (I only have to look to my own experience to certify that), but I still wanted George and Nina to live happily ever after together. In other news, I've been listening to The Cure's "A Letter to Elise" almost continually today. Gee, that almost relates.

June 14, 1998 - 3:18 pm

I've been really dizzy since I came in from church today. Everytime I stand up, I almost fall down. This is no fun at all.

June 14, 1998 - 11:10 pm

I just finished reading August Wilson's "Joe Turner's Come and Gone" for my Theatre Appreciation class. It kind of reminded me of Shakespeare in a way. It was the kind of a mix of practical and supernatural that really holds my attention. I'll eagerly await the class discussion tomorrow.

June 15, 1998 - 8:44 pm

My roommate has been asleep since before I came home from work. This is getting kind of annoying.

June 16, 1998 - 5:38 pm

I got an e-mail from Jessi today. She sent it using her boyfriend Tyson's account. I was really happy to hear from her. In other news, my friend Jason is coming to Gainesville to hang out for a couple days. We're hoping we can get hold of our friend George so he can join in on the fun. I'm also very tired because I was up last night worrying. I read the due date on my housing bill wrong, and I thought that it was overdue. I was trying to figure out how I was going to make the money magically appear when I realized that it wasn't really due until July 15 - after I've started getting paychecks from my job.

June 16, 1998 - 7:20 pm

I just made a bowl of ramen noodles (chicken mushroom flavor), and I actually enjoyed eating them. That hasn't happened in over a year.

June 18, 1998 - 11:51 am

I just dominated a Quake match on Evil Eva 21-4 with a ping of over 300. I feel very powerful right now.

June 20, 1998 - 9:48 pm

I watched the X-Files movie last night. It was utterly amazing. The movie actually interacted with the TV show. If you're an X-Files fan and you haven't seen it, go now and find a theatre that's playing it and by a ticket for the next available show. If you're not, convert now. I'm heading to Jasper for the rest of Dad's Day weekend. I'll be back either Sunday or Monday.

June 22, 1998 - 11:38 am

I just got back from Jasper a few minutes ago. It seems that all of north Florida is covered in a fog-like smoke from the fires over in Jacksonville. In fact, for that reason, my throat is a wee bit sore.

June 23, 1998 - 9:21 am

The DHNet server is once again reluctant to contact the outside world. Don't think I'm hiding from you.

June 23, 1998 - 10:51 pm

The DHNet server is still down. I'm using my Gatorlink access to communicate with the outside world. That means that I'm not going to be online as much as I usually am. However, if you really feel the need to talk to me, feel free to call me. My current phone number is (352) 846-7986. This applies doubly for those of you who were born and remain to this day female. I'll just be sitting here in front of the computer, continuing my quest to learn the Visual Basic programming language in one summer. I'll also be drinking lots of soda because Publix had twelve-packs of Pepsi products on sale for $1.89. The limit was four, but rest assured that I'll be back tomorrow.

June 25, 1998 - 12:40 am

I got Final Fantasy 7 today. It's really cool. The music leaves you saying, "This is MIDI? No, way..." The graphics blow your mind, and the storyline is entertaining. Of course, I've only been playing it for about 3 or 4 hours now. If you have a computer and don't already own a Playstation, go buy this game now. In case you're wondering, DHNet is still down, and I still don't have a girlfriend.

June 25, 1998- 3:01 am

There's no clear separation between night and morning, and there's little hope for the world to be found at 3 am.

June 25, 1998 - 10:42 am

I just read that the cost of DHNet service in halls that are connected will be included in the rent payment now. Wish I could find out why it isn't working. I don't like modems. No chicken. SQUAWK!

June 25, 1998 - 5:27 pm

I really need to start jogging again. I'm really out of shape. The only problem is that I hate jogging.

June 26, 1998 - 10:57 am

I had serious computer difficulties last night because of the absence of DHNet. I had been playing Final Fantasy 7 (of course). I quit playing at about ten so I could see if Eric, Allyson, and Jason were online. At that time, I decided to see if DHNet had been fixed since about 5:30. (Okay, I admit that it was the behavior of a desparate man.) I clicked on my happy Network Neighborhood icon, and the poop hit the fan. I got one of those hourglass cursors, and it wouldn't go away. I pressed ctrl-alt-del. I discovered that something called msgsvr32 was stuck. That happens to be a key Windows component. "Oh, well," I thought, "I'll restart, and it will go away." It didn't. When I got to Windows, I saw nothing but the hourglass on a black background. Bad. I tried re-installing stuf to replace the bad files, but it was to no avail. Finally, I deleted my windows\system directory where most of the drivers live and re-installed. That solved the problem. Plug and play took over and re-installed the drivers I had visciously butchered. Life was happy. My computer was the same as it had been just four hours earlier. Then, I installed the driver for my network card. Hourglass. Black background. I eventually stopped this aberrant behavior by disabling my network driver in safe mode. In other words, I could have saved myself a lot of work by just doing that in the first place. Of course the evening wasn't a total loss. Windows 95 now feels that it's okay to play with the CD-ROM DOS driver again, and this morning I discovered that the reason why the network card had done this was because something had changed it's settings.

June 26, 1998 - 7:18 pm

I had a chicken bowl from Maui Teryaki for dinner tonight. Everytime I eat a chicken bowl, about halfway through it I'm full. I think it's the rice.

June 28, 1998 - 10:04 am

I'm wearing my Tigger boxers today...not that anyone really cares...

June 28, 1998 - 12:14 pm

I'm considering growing a goatee out of sheer boredeom.

June 29, 1998 - 2:29 am

Lisa just sent me the nicest e-mail. I mean I think this is the nicest e-mail I've ever gotten. When I read it, I felt all warm; and I felt like I was going to cry. It was that nice. It was so nice that I'm still in a nice version of shock, and I don't quite know what to write here. This has deepened my conviction that Lisa is a very nice girl.

June 29, 1998 - 8:44 pm

Network access is back, and I got to talk to Lisa. It has been a good evening thus far, and it can only get better.

June 30, 1998 - 12:32 am

If today is only one-tenth as good as yesterday, it will still be a great day.
