War Resisters League: "The War Resisters League affirms that all war is a crime against humanity. We therefore are determined not to support any kind of war, international or civil, and to strive nonviolently for the removal of all causes of war."
The War & Peace Foundation: This group is committed to abolishing nuclear weapons, greater reliance upon the United Nations, establishment of an international arms sales register, governmental reform, media accountability, public education about nuclear weapons and power, the end of weapons research and development, and the development of alternative energy sources.
Veterans for Peace: This group is made up of veterans working for world peace. They attempt to educate the public as to the costs of war, effect a non-aggressive foreign policy, end the arms race, and abolish war altogether.
Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation: "Addressing The Causes, Conduct And Consequences Of War" "Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation is an international humanitarian and advocacy organization dedicated to assisting victims of war."
National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund: "The National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund advocates for legislation enabling conscientious objectors to war to have the military portion of their federal income taxes directed to a special fund for projects that enhance peace."
The World Court Project: "The World Court Project was a successful international initiative to seek an advisory opinion from the World Court on the legality of nuclear weapons. This legal step will play a crucial part in the nuclear abolition movement's broader strategy to limit and finally abolish nuclear weapons."
Fellowship of Reconciliation: "The Fellowship of Reconciliation is comprised of women and men who recognize the essential unity of all creation and have joined together to explore the power of love and truth for resolving human conflict."
Christian Peacemaker Teams: "Christian Peacemaker Teams is a unique initiative among cooperating Mennonite and Brethren churches and Friends meetings. Our ministry of Biblically-based and spiritually centered peacemaking emphasizes negotiation, protection of human rights, public witness, and nonviolent direct action."
Pax Christi USA: "Pax Christi USA strives to create a world that reflects the Peace of Christ by exploring, articulating, and witnessing to the call of Christian nonviolence....Pax Christi USA rejects war, preparations for war, and every form of violence and domination. It advocates primacy of conscience, economic and social justice, and respect for creation."
The Foundation for A Healing Among Nations: "The Foundation for A Healing Among Nations is a spiritually based peace fellowship working collaboratively with citizens of the world to develop creative solutions to shape and enhance a higher quality of life at the local, national and international level."
COPRED: The Consortium on Peace Research, Education and Development- "COPRED is a community of educators, activists and researchers working on alternatives to violence and war. COPRED spreads effective methods of nonviolent social change among diverse racial and socio-economic populations."
United States Institute of Peace: "The mission of the United States Institute of Peace is to strengthen the nation's capabilities to promote the peaceful resolution of international conflicts." It is perhaps worth noting that this is an organization created and funded by Congress.
Women's Action for New Directions: "Founded as Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament by Dr. Helen Caldicott in the early 1980s, WAND continues in the 1990s as Women's Action for New Directions to empower women politically, to reduce militarism and violence, to redirect military resources toward unmet human and environmental needs."
Grandmothers for Peace International: "We call for an end to the madness of the nuclear arms race throughout the world, elimination of nuclear weapons from our planet, and the removal of violence among all humankind. We believe that the tremendous power of the love we possess can be an effective force in the struggle to eliminate nuclear weapons and save the world from disaster."
Nuclear Age Peace Foundation: "The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan international organization. It is comprised of individuals and organizations from throughout the world that recognize the imperative for peace in the Nuclear Age."
International Peace Bureau: "IPB is the world's oldest and most comprehensive international peace network. With 19 internationals and 141 national/local member organisations (and 120 individuals) in over 40 countries, it brings together people working for peace in many different sectors: not only pacifists but also women's, youth, labour, religious, political and professional bodies."
Downwinders: Originally founded as an advocacy group for fallout victims downwind of the Nevada nuclear test site, the group has expanded its efforts to other sites where nearby residents are in jeopardy due to nuclear, military, or environmental projects.
Center for Nonproliferation Studies: "The Center for Nonproliferation Studies was created...to confront the serious threat of international proliferation of nuclear, missile, biological, chemical, and advanced conventional weapons. The CNS provides research tools, analysis, training, and education on nonproliferation issues to scholars and policy-makers from around the world."
Council for a Livable World: The Council for a Livable World is dedicated to eliminating weapons of mass destruction- nuclear, chemical, and biological. The Council also acts as a poitical action committee, supporting Senate candidates who support arms control.
Abolition 2000: "Abolition 2000: A Global Network to Eliminate Nuclear Weapons is a dynamic new international citizens' movement that calls for conclusion by the year 2000 of negotiations on a treaty to eliminate nuclear weapons within a timebound framework."
Federation of American Scientists: "FAS is the oldest organization dedicated to ending the arms race and avoiding the use of nuclear weapons, and much of its work has been in nuclear arms control and disarmament." The original group was founded in 1945 by members of the Manhattan Project.
PeacePAC: "PeacePAC is a nonpartisan, grass-roots political action committee that supports candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives who are committed to nuclear arms control, nuclear disarmament, the prevention of nuclear war, and significant reductions in military spending."
Peace Action: This group works toward nuclear disarmament, reduction of military spending, and the end of the international arms trade. Peace Action lobbies on the national, state, and local levels, and publishes an annual voting record for every member of Congress.
Center for Economic Conversion: "The organization's mission is to promote and facilitate the transfer of military resources to productive civilian uses and contribute to the process of building a sustainable and equitable peace-oriented economy."
National Commission for Economic Conversion and Disarmament: "The National Commission for Economic Conversion and Disarmament is a non-profit, non-partisan research and public education organization dedicated to educating the public on the need and the means for an orderly transfer of military resources to civilian use."
Nuclear Control Institute: "Founded in 1981, the NCI is an independent research and advocacy center specializing in problems of nuclear proliferation." Especially concerned with removing weapons grade plutonium and uranium from civilian nuclear power and research programs.
The Arms Control Association: "The Arms Control Association, founded in 1971, is a national nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to promoting public underdtanding of and support for effective arms control policies." Includes nuclear, chemical, and biological arms.
Chemical and Biological Arms Control Institute: "The Chemical and Biological Arms Control Institute is a nonprofit corporation established to promote the goals of arms control and nonproliferation, with a special, although not exclusive focus on the elimination of chemical and biological weapons."
Campaign for the Non-Proliferation Treaty: This is the page of the group that secured the indefinite extension of the Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1995. Links to pages of many of the Campaign member groups, NPT Conference documents.
NISBCO: The National Interreligious Service Board for Conscientious Objectors- This organization, sponsored by a number of different religious bodies, helps and supports military personnel and others who oppose war for reasons of conscience.
Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors: "The Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors (CCCO) was founded in 1948 to protect and promote the rights of conscientious objectors to war. Our long term goals include demilitarizing our schools and communities, improving conditions for military personnel who come to realize their objections to war, and eliminating the Selective Service System."
Coalition to Stop Gun Violence: "The goal of CSGV is the orderly elimination of the private sale of handguns and assault weapons in the United States." Site includes stats on guns and gun violence, federal and state laws, published reports on various relevant topics.
Educational Fund to End Handgun Violence: "The Educational Fund is dedicated to stopping gun violence through education, litigation, and grass roots activism." Site hosts three resource pages: Hands Without Guns, Ceasefire Action Network, Firearms Litigation Clearinghouse.
Handgun Control, Inc.: Hangun Control, Inc. is working for a future where "criminals, children and other high risk persons don’t have access to guns; guns are redesigned to minimize the risk of unintentional injury and illegal use; people understand that guns are not a good answer for self-protection; very few people in America are killed, injured or traumatized by guns."
Violence Policy Center: The Violence Policy Center views firearms violence not as a crime issue, but as a widespread public health issue which manifests itself in many ways, including crime. Focus is on education and policy change.
Friends for a Non-Violent World: "FNVW seeks to promote nonviolence. We provide educational opportunities, resources, empowerment, and support to those endeavoring to find alternatives to violence in their personal lives, their communities, and society at large."
Alternatives to Violence Project: "The Alternatives to Violence Project is a multicultural organization of volunteers offering experiential workshops that empower individuals to liberate themselves and others from the burden of violence. Our fundamental belief is that there is a power for peace in everyone, and that this power has the ability to transform violence."
Jewish Peace Fellowship: "Committed to nonviolent social activism and Jewish teachings, we are concerned with the problems facing the Jewish people and, indeed, all people." Pursuit of a nonviolent way of life grounded in Jewish traditions and ideals.
Peace Brigades International: PBI sends volunteers to areas of political repression and unrest. There they provide protective accompaniment for people or organizations at risk for political violence or other harm.
Advocacy and Intelligence Index for POW/MIA's: The strength of this site is not in the commentary on the front page, but in the Archives and Issues section, which contains a wealth of Congressional reports, CIA and State Department documents, comprehensive bibliographies of POW/MIA material, and more.
20/20 Vision: "20/20 Vision is a national non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the environment and promoting peace through grassroots action. At the heart of 20/20 Vision's mission is the revitalization of democracy by making it simple for citizens to participate in national and local policy decisions." Citizens are urged to devote 20 minutes a month and $20 a year.
Celebrate World Peace 2000: "This worldwide network of individuals, groups and organizations is dedicated to helping promote a resolution before the United Nations to declare a 24-hour world cease-fire on January 1, 2000; a Declaration of Peace culminating on January 1, 2000 as WORLD PEACE DAY; and the year 2000 as The INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF PEACE."
