LOST FOREVER

by Jared Winikor

As I walked into the Alachua County Library, I greeted everyone and started looking for a book that I could read at home. I didn't care what book I got, but I wanted an unusual book. As I was looking, I saw an old blue book. It looked unusual. I walked over to it and picked it up. The title read in a fainted font, Misty Mountains by John White. The cover of the book was torn up, but I could see some faded mountains. The book as definitely not ordinary.

I carefully, but slowly, opened to the front page. The front page had the copyright date and the sequel to this book written on it. It read:

Copyright 1934
Published by Stone Skipper Publishing Co.
Also available by John White, Dirty Waters, the sequel

I turned to the next page. I examined it closely. All of a sudden, I started to feel my arm being pulled by something. Then, my other arm was being pulled. "What is happening?" I thought to myself. In the wink of an eye, my whole body was being pulled. It seemed like the book was doing it. I quickly slammed the book shut and the pulling stopped. Now my heart was beating rapidly. I slowly opened the book again and within seconds I got sucked in.

I started whirling around like I was flying until I hit something really hard. "Ouch!" I exclaimed, "I hit a rock!" Gosh, I wondered where I was and what had just happened. I looked all around me. I was on the mountains. That's why it felt so cold!

I started to walk up the mountains. While walking up I slipped on a few rocks and almost fell down the mountain. Climbing up the mountain was tough and I started to get tired after half an hour. I found a tree and rested next to it. I waited there for a couple of minutes. Then I heard something. It sounded like a big rock. I turned around and saw a big boulder coming down with several other small rocks. I looked even closer. It was an avalanche! Without panicking, I ran down the mountain as fast as I could. I found a tall tree, climbed it, and let all the rocks roll down. "Wow, that was close!"

I got out of the tree and started my long journey down the mountain. I couldn't believe what was happening. I actually got sucked into a book and was on a cold mountain with no civilization. I wondered how I was going to get food and survive out here. I was just going to have to try and find my way out. Somehow, I would have to get out of this extremely unusual book and return home safely. I probably have to find the book Misty Mountains to bet back home.

While walking up the mountain, I kept my eyes open for food. Over by the evergreen tree, I saw some bushes with many berries. I hurried over and tried to collect as many berries as I could hold. I had enough to last for several days.

I kept moving until I spotted something big and brown. At first I thought it was a mirage. Then I heard a loud growl. It was a bear and it was pretty close! I started to run and then I didn't see it anymore. I turned around and the bear was right there in my face. I didn't know what to do. I just threw some berries at it and ran. I ran high up the mountain and then rested next to a tree. I looked back. Thank goodness the bear was gone!

I kept moving up until I was at the middle of the mountain. I saw a rowboat on the side of the mountain tied up to a rock. I hurried over to it and quickly got in. I placed the boat in the mountain stream and paddled down stream. I paddled for about two hours. I stopped to eat and then paddled again for three hours which seemed like an eternity. Eventually, I saw a city.

Quickly I made my way to the boat dock. I jumped out of the boat and ran like the wind through the city hoping there was a library. I saw some houses and marketplaces, but no library. I kept running. "Yes!" Over to the left was a library. I sprinted as fast as my legs would carry me over to the library.

When I got there, I looked for the book, Misty Mountains and couldn't find it! Luckily I remembered the name of the sequel. I looked for the book, Dirty Waters by John White. There it was! I picked it up, opened the book, and got sucked in. I started to whirl around again until I found myself at home. What an adventure I had had!
