Reading Vocabulary Quizzes--Fourth Term

bugzap.gif

Below are listed the vocabulary words on which you will be tested each Tuesday.  The other five words will be review words from previous weeks .    You will receive handouts in class which show the words used in sentences and with definitions in the four column note format that you should be using for your own individual vocabulary (20 or more words that are new to you that you are coming across in your reading of novels).   If you would like to hear the words pronounced (and find out what else we're doing in class this week, call the home-phone 24-hour recording at 955-6942, teacher number 5202 (area code 352).

Research shows that reading comprehension (understanding what you read--and what is tested on reading tests like the F-CAT) improves with an improvement in vocabulary development, so it is important that you REALLY understand what these words mean.  Sometimes I will test by giving you the definition and you supply the word.  Sometimes I will do just the opposite (definitions in your own words, not memorized).  Sometimes I may ask you to use the word in a sentence other than the one given.  There may even be times when I will use analogies (like  "warm is to hot as cool is to _________" and you would need to supply the word "cold"--only it will be the vocabulary words you'll be supplying).  If you truly understand the word, the format of the test won't matter.

If you ever do not understand what a word means, ASK!  I would strongly suggest that you use the words all week and not try to memorize them the night before. Remember since the test involves review words, you'll have to remember them for the whole year so it will pay to learn them well.
