The Token Ring MAU is a device that preforms the same function as a Ethernet Hub, although it works totally different. An ethernet hub is not necessary for a network of 2 machines, however a MAU is essential for all Token Ring Networks. Ethernet hubs go back and forth, or switch, but Token Ring goes around in a electrical circle, this allows token ring to still operate quickly on very large networks.
