The primary tool for planting maize is the "espeque" or "chuzo". Seeds are kept in a cutoff five quart plastic oil jug. The jug is fastened about the waist and used to hold the seeds.

A hole in the soil is opened and two or three seeds are dropped in and stirred for seed to soil contact. A pace is taken and the process repeated until the row is complete.

Fertilizer is applied to growing maize in a similar manner. A hole is opened at the side of the maize plant near activley growing roots, and a pinch of fertilizer is dropped in. The fertilizers used most commonly are di-ammonium phosphate (18-46-0) and urea (46-0-0).
