Matt Traxler of Six Feet Deep

Matt Traxler of Six Feet Deep

I did an interview with Matt, but its almost exactly like my interview with Myk, only with out the stuff about writing the music, which Myk does most of. So instead I found this one done by ``Garlic Press'' and excellent underground zine. (If you don't subscribe, it's only 5 bucks, check out their web page on the main STRUGGLE page.) This interview takes place before Cornerstone '96 so its not real accurate info, but is still cool.

whats the cleveland scene like?

it's kinda craze.y I don't think it's as bas as it was.
it's far from good. it's really violent, the hardcore shows
are at least. for a while there was a lack of hardcore shows
cause nobody would have'em anymore because there was fights
and total violence at all of them. but there has been a lot
	      more shows.

how come it's so violent over there?

it's always bee like that, as long as i've been in the scene. i
haven't been in it as long as some others but since i've been in the
scene it's been total chaos. the first show i went to was sheer
brutatity. i can't say any 1 reason why other than people are angry
and they take it out at shows i guess.

it makes it hard for you guys. Are you playing a lot of shows?

SFD are playing no shows right now. we're trying to pray about stuff
and figure out God's will for us becuase mike schaffer and matt
simmons quit the band. bryan gray joined the band a while back and
klank from circle of dust filled in on guitar. we're trying to
figure out God's will for us as band to keep going or call it quits.
the only thing we have booked right now is cornerstone fest. we'll
see what happens after that. we're not taking any shows up until
     then

whats up with the R.E.X. situation?

to tell you the truth i honestly don't know. i wish i did. just what
i heard, pretty much what everybody else heard: that they're going
bankrupt. so we keep getting put off. our phone calls weren't
getting answered. the cd should have come out way back at the
beginning of the year. because we had it half recorded. we went in
the beginning of nov/dec and had the first half recorded. then we
were scheduled to go back in, the first week of jan. they called
us the day before and told us they didn't have the money we couldn't
go. so we figured everything was going down and we were dont with
R.E.X. we sent them a letter to see about getting out of our contract
because we wanted to get this record out. we weren't sure what was
gonna happen with them and didn't want to wait around for a year. so
we got a hold of them. afther they got this letter, they sent us the
rest of the money to finish in the studio. everything is recorded the
album is totaly done, the artwork is done we're basically waiting on
     them.

so what's the new album like? what's it like compared to the 1st.

it's got a lot fo the same elements as the first one. it's heavier
and faster. at the same time it's more metal but at the same time
it's more hardcore that the 1st one. there's a lot of different
styles. i think styles vary so much from what we've done in the past.
there's parts that are totally mellow and then parts that are totally
     crazy and fast and brutal.

i read somewhere that you all were into different stuff, has that
affected the sound or direction of the album?

i don't think that affected ti too mcuh. musically myk porter the
singer, wrote almost all of it. bryan contributed on some of it,
tom and i helped out with some of the lyrics. the majority of the
album myk wrote, but he is inot a lot of different stuff so that may
very well have contributed to it.

how about the lyrics, what are they dealing with this time around?
