Now before you go and E-mail me something about how hockey sucks and this sport is great...read on.

If you've never seen hockey live, you can not imagine what the sport is really like. I know that hockey is a hard sport to follow if you don't know the rules, I've tried to help people before while watching a game, but once you get the major ones figured out...it just does not get any better.

The sport is just drenched in tradition. Its one of the oldest professional sports in history. It was a professional sport before Lord Stanley decided to award a beautiful Silver cup with the names of the team members who managed to become the champions, and that was 102 years ago. 77 years ago, it became what it is known as today, in the National Hockey League (NHL). Now consider that we are only up to what superbowl 27, 28 or something.

The sport's history is also riddled with incredible feats such as Bobby Orr's goal in overtime to win the Stanley Cup (see he had the puck, was coming in fast on the goal, cut to the left, and got tripped, as he flew through the air, he swung his stick, and hit the puck, which beat the netminder, and won the game.) It is also just filled with incredible athletes, of both years gone by (Gordie Howe, who holds the record for playing in a professional sport longer that any player in any sport, with something like 54 years!), to today (Mario Lemieux, who fought off cancer, in an incredible amount of time, and will return to the game next season.)

Hockey players have to be the most talented people in sports. 1st of all they are not is shoes...or cleats getting good foot holds, they are on ICE, wearing skates. 2nd there are no special teams, that come in and do specific things, every player does everything.

Now I understand that they have skated all their lives, and its pretty natural to them, but still they do have positions, and different lines, but hockey players have to be proficient in all aspects of the game. Defensive players have to have stick and puck handling abilities, because they will sooner or later be in position to shoot. Offensive players have to be able to get the puck back also.I could go on and on...There is no denying it...Hockey is an incredible sport check these out.
