IF IT HARM NONE, DO AS YOU WILL. This is the Wiccan Rede, one of the most fundamental ethical statements in Paganism. It's deceptively simple, yet amazingly profound. It clearly defines the moral balance within Paganism, and the deal we make with the universe: if we harm no one, we may do as we will. As long as we accomplish the first, we are entitled to the second, and if we claim the second, we must do the first. In other words, we start with the simple rule that we may cause no harm; there may be debate about whether this includes harm against non-human animals and Earth herself, but it always includes humans. Harm is usually defined as mental or physical injury. When we accept this ethical rule and manifest it in our lives, we believe that we may then do all else as we desire. We may express our own Wills in the world, at least until we come up to someone elses Will. This meeting of Wills is not an excuse for conflict, however. Our differences are a chance to learn and grow, to celebrate the diversity of Nature which makes us strong. It doesn't mean that we don't occasionally fail to live up to the Rede, but we always try.
