Warwick Castle Gatehouse and Main Tower
On the left is the gatehouse to Warwick Castle, the main entrance, and the most fortified. Originally, the bridge over the moat was nonexistant, instead there was a drawbridge counterweighted with a heavy gate; when the bridge was lifted, the weight of the lowering gate contributed to the lifting force. The moat too was apparently more formidible as well: it was twice as deep, steeper, and could have water channeled into it. I imagine that it's a bit difficult to swim while in armor.
Walking into the gatehouse is quite the experience; between it's twin gates is a long passageway with plenty of murder holes and areas from which one could fling projectiles and boiling nastiness on to invaders.
