Being originally the weapon of a knight of high standing, Vigil's blade is forged of shing steel and bolstered by the magic infused into the sword itself. Its hilt is steel inlaid with silver. The quillions are seven inches from tip to tip, rectangular in cross section and slightly flared and curved. The grip is wrapped with rope-twisted silver wire, though it has at times been covered with leather depending on the tastes of its wielder. The pommel is a heavy, fluted ball. Background: ----------- In the days of Lum and Leuk-O, when the Oeridian peoples began to carve out kingdoms in the Flanaess, conflict was a fact of life. Young kingdoms fed upon each other, with only the strongest of the litter clawing their way to the top. In the end Aerdy proved the victor, but only after centuries of petty kings each trying to hold on to their own small chunks of land. One of these kings was a man by the name of Fendry, a wise and kind king by the standards of the time. Much of his success was attributable to his cousin, advisor, and general Halarh. Halarh was cut from much the same cloth as his cousin, but he had no aspirations to rulership. A great warrior and devoted follower of Heironeous, Halarh was content to aid in the defense and administration of his cousin's kingdom. The wise and the just are often unprepared for the machinations of their more voracious neighbors, and Fendry was not immune to this weakness. During the celebration following Fendry's marriage to his second wife, agents of a neighboring kingdom who had infiltrated Fendry's court opened the gates to an invading force, catching most of the castle's defenders unawares. Halarh, who habitually abstained from drink and was vigilant at all times, was one of the few warriors prepared to repel the attack. Rallying his men, Halarh prepared to hold the innermost section of the keep. The defenders held a narrow hallway against the attacking force for three hours, when a returning border patrol was able to attack the rear ranks of the intruders' force. During the final battle, many of Fendry's defenders were slain, and not one of the attackers escaped alive. Sometime during the long battle, Halarh was mortally wounded. Following the defeat of the assault force, he presented himself before King Fendry. Kneeling and leaning heavily on his sword, he said, "I regret that I can no longer be of service to you, cousin. I pray that Heironeous will protect you in my absence..." Halarh's son, Heldirh, took up his father's sword and rose to a similar station. Fendry's kingdom was joined with another through marriage some years later. Heldirh died in a later battle, leaving no heirs, and Halarh's sword was taken as a war prize, having gained something of a reputation of its own. The sword was reputed to be magical, able to cleave shields in twain and shatter lesser weapons with ease. To one extent or another, most of these tales were true. In response to Halarh's dying words, Heironeous had infused the sword with the general's essence. The sword was not Halarh per se, his soul having ascended to its own place in Heironeous' court, but the essence of his personality was bound into the weapon. Over the years the empowered blade slowly gained its own consciousness, again not quite Halarh but very similar in its nature. During this time it also changed hands many times, and as its intelligence grew it began more and more to judge its wielders. Those that it approved of were able to employ more of its abilities, while others found the sword to be no more than an exceptionally sharp blade. During the early years of The Great Kingdom, a knight who had come into possession of the blade and had rated well enough to unlock all of its powers gave it the name "Vigil". A name is a thing of power, even for a sword, and from this point on Vigil achieved true consciousness. It was passed from father to son for several generations, each wielder a knight of the territory and later kingdom of Furyondy. Eventually, one of these knights was killed in battle and the sword stolen by looters. Vigil made its way into what were to become the Shield Lands. It attached itself to another worthy family, being passed down through the generations again during the rise of the Shield Lands. It kept abreast of news of the Great Kingdom, and was greatly displeased by the course that the leadership of that nation had taken. And so now Vigil rests in the hands of Franz, watching history unfold... Roleplay: --------- Vigil's main goal is to aid in the just rulership of nations, especially small and emerging nations. It has never been happy in the hands of adventurers, and prefers to be an heirloom. Though it has the power of speech, it usually uses empathy to communicate with its wielders, preferring a more subtle approach when possible. In times of great need, Vigil will speak up. It has often spoken to those that is does not like, mostly to convince them to give the sword to someone more worthy. Miscellaneous: -------------- Fighting Style: Vigil has the essence of an old school fighter and war general. Its style is very aggressive and straightforward. Its blocks are solid, dead blocks. Its attacks are powerful blows that sacrifice finesse for ferocity. Vigil is a helm-splitter and a shield-breaker, preferring to make its own openings in an opponent's defense by battering its way through rather than trying to exploit the tiny chinks already there.
