Celestian N(G) Stars, Space, Wanderers
(Intermediate God; 6th level & Quest Spells)
Celestian, the Star Wanderer, is said to be brother to Fharlanghn, the
endless wanderer of the Prime Material. Celestian wanders the Astral,
Ethereal and Inner Planes, especially the Astral. He is depicted as a
tall, lean man of middle years, ebony-skinned and dark of eye. His
garments are inky black, but somewhere about him he has his symbol of
seven "stars" -- diamond, amethyst, sapphire, emerald, topaz, jacinth,
ruby -- which blaze with color of far suns. He has many unique spells
unknown to other Powers (save perhaps Boccob). He affects meteors,
comets, and similar heavenly bodies. As a form of Sky God, Celestian
has influence over some aspects of light and weather.
Service and worship are always conducted in the open, during the
night, preferably when the sky is clear and many stars are visible.
Priesthood:
-----------
This small priesthood is very studious and meditative, and also somewhat
secretive and detached from everyday life. Acquisition of arcane lore
and magical items that aid travel are important goals. Raiments -
colored robe with faint star patterns.
There are seven orders of the priesthood of Celestian.

Description:
------------
Agath is a blonde haired man of average height in his early forties.
Years of self-study and research has left him with a slight stoop and wrinkles
in his brown eyes. Handsome in his younger days, and mildly attractive
currently, Agath's smile is friendly and sincere, although he seldoms displays
it when concentrating on the task ahead. His voice is persuasive, reasoned, and
inspires loyalty and deference, wisdom notwithstanding. Overall, the man has a
compelling quality about him which has enabled him to lead the Celestian church
in Ulek for many years.
Background:
-----------
Agath is still the head of the Heavens of Celestian, a temple which was
located near the village of Thrutch. This village was in the foothills of the
Lortmil Mountains in the Principality of Ulek. Alas, all is lost. With the
rise of the Despot Turrush Mak and the invasion of the Principality, Agath, his
followers and his flock were routed from their temple into the very Lortmils
themselves. Arduous weeks of fighting a retreating action against the euroz and
other humanoid tribes have left Agath's forces decimating. Where once there was
almost 100 followers, all that remain are 6. After crossing the Lortmils, the
group found themselves in one of the border towns of Celene. Infuriated that
the Olven Court has not responded to his requests for passage through their
lands, Agath and his people sit idlely in the town. Now, this summons! How is
he to get to Magepoint? And what of those who rely upon him? Weary, hungry and
homeless, they look to him for succor. Little remains of the wealth that once
your temple housed and that which you were able to save was mostly used during
your retreat across the Lortmils.
-----
Agath chafed at the inaction. His thoughts wandered to his temple, and
to the village of Thrutch. All lost. Turrosh Mak. The wars. He heard the
beginnings of conversation, heated conversation, outside his room, and stepped
out to see Gerric, his second, exchanging words with a Celenese knight.
"Agath," the priest of Fharlanghn came to him, "this messenger from the
capital itself has just arrived with a message for you. He wants you, you alone,
to accompany him back to Celene."
"Good day Agath of Thrutch, High Priest of Celestian," the elf bowed, "I
am Eldain of Celene. I am told by my superiors that you have a journey to
undertake and my instructions are to escort you through Celene. My superiors are
anxious to see you on your way as conveniently as possible."
Agath gave a snort of derision but kept his tongue in check. For weeks
he had requested for safe passage through Celenese lands, and for weeks he had
been ignored, only to have this lackey turn up and offer him the same. He opened
the letter, scanned its contents, and looked up. "Eldain, I shall be a moment."
Agath whirled around back into his room to the astonishment of Gerric and the
elf.
The Circle of Eight? The seal of Rao? What can this portend? What would
they want with him? How had they known where to find him, seeing that the
Principality is in a state of ruin? What is to be done here in Ulek? Can he
continue the war without resources?
"Gerric, organise our men. We leave with Eldain within the hour. I'll
explain as we go."
There was hardly anything to pack, Agath and his men arrived with the
barest minimum of resources and equipment. Six of them left, seven, including
Gerric. We shall have to stop at Greyhawk before proceeding, Agath thought. Sage
Kestris could do with 6 able-bodied men to help him out, not that the work of
Celestian was particularly physical in nature. Better that than to leave the
men here. I'll offer them the option whether or not to follow me all the way to
Magepoint. I could charge them with the task of rebuilding the church effort in
my absence, and come back for them after the appointment. Gerric, on the other
hand, will come with me. Agath smiled to himself at the thought of the man's
devotion and loyalty. As they travelled further and further across Celene, and
away from Ulek, Agath tried harder and harder to put aside thoughts of regret
and sadness. He had spent the last 12 years, no, more than that, in the various
states of Ulek, doing his priestly work. he was particularly proud of the
Heavens of Celestian, and was content to have spent the last few years pottering
about in researching other planes and dimensions. Perhaps this summons would be
an opportunity to regain some resources or favors to rebuild the temple, recruit
followers. Maybe the Circle of Eight was concerned with the war with the Pomarj.
Agath noticed that Eldain's route avoided important elven cities, merely
skirting the borders and outlying towns. The usual paranoia and insularism of
Celene. Agath remained civil towards the elf and his squad despite the lack of
assistance from Celene for Ulek. The elf was after all, granting him passage.
Eldain left them near a woodsmen town in the Gnarley, and Agath and his
men made their way finally to Greyhawk. There he visited Kestris, but gave
himself the luxury of a day's rest before proceeding once again to Magepoint,
this time on horseback.
Roleplay:
---------
Agath's motivations are obvious, and I expect him to be somewhat
impatient and businesslike as a result of the events of the last couple of
months. His usual easygoing demeanor is now colored by the urgency of war and
the need to, hopefully, return to Ulek to continue his work. He hopes to get
something out of this response to the summons, and will attempt to impress the
Circle of Eight with his needs as well as his abilities. He is used to being in
charge, but is more used to commanding with ease and persuasion than with
directives and instructions. Others (PCs) who get to know him well will
rediscover the quiet easygoing man within who loves nothing more than to search
the stars and heavens in contemplation and meditation compared to the curt and
aloof person now.
Miscellaneous:
--------------
Looking forward to a good time. It's not my first Pbem, but certainly
the first with that much attention to detail (boy did I have to reread my
encumbrance and bulk rules!). I'm interested to see how a tighter game like this
will turn out. And I haven't played Isle of the Ape before.
Access:
-------
I access email both via UNIX and Windows, and from work and home. I only
have a small allocation of memory space, so large files are inconvenient. Plain
text will be just fine. No problems regularly participating in the game, perhaps
busier with personal stuff in the weekends, but weekdays should be fine for
posting.
