What you describe is pretty much what I wanted to with the ATV repeater at Brookdale. We have a controller with 10 video inputs, and only one are used. Nothing like using your resources to the maximum possible extent, huh? Anyway, the idea was proposed many years ago by Dave, N2KAU. We were either planning a single camera at 350 feet with azimuth, elevation, and zoom control, or three or four cameras that would cover a 360 degree field of view. IN fact, whenever I see a cheap chip camera advertised in a magazine, I start thinking about top-mounting a few of these suckers and feeding the video into the repeater. Unfortunately, such a plan is far too expensive for our budget. It would take about $1000 for the installation, and lots of crossed fingers to hope nothing breaks the first time the tower takes a lightning hit. As far as distances are concerned, I don't know of any easy way to estimate either the distance to the cloud or its altitude. If its distance can be measured along with the elevation to the top of the cloud, then simple trigonometry will provide its height. Another thing I wanted to do was get access to Weather RADAR video and feed that into the repeater. But that sort of stuff is now much easier to access via the Internet. SO much for Ham Radio...
