U.S. Radar-Detector Laws
If any state restricts, bans, or otherwise regulates
the use of RADAR-detectors, there will be a link to the actual text of the
law for that state below.
RADAR Detectors are illegal period in ALL states
for all "commercial" vehicles! Here is the Federal Law.
- Alabama - Not regulated.
- Arizona - Not regulated.
- Arkansas - Not regulated.
- California - Not regulated.
- Colorado - Not regulated.
- Connecticut - Not regulated. - That's right. All the signs
you're used to seeing along the roads up there came down this year (early
1998). See Section 14-137,1 of their Code Book. Will try to get a
copy of the text soon and put it up here. And for those of you who
insist on giving me a hard time on it, this from the Connecticut
State Police, to whom I made a long-distance call just to
be sure. We do this for you of course, because we love you, you know.
(Yah. Please.)
- Delaware - Not regulated.
- District of Columbia (Washington,
D.C.) - RADAR-detectors illegal. For more information on
your rights, see The R.A.D.A.R.
Home Page - Legal Section.
- Florida - Not regulated.
- Georgia - Not regulated.
- Hawaii - (unknown)
- Idaho - Not regulated.
- Illinois - Not regulated, except in commercial motor vehicles
(which is redundant legislation, since Federal
law makes that illegal in any U.S. state anyway; BUT, some states like to
have it in their lawbooks so that they can charge added fines and
penalties that would go to the state).

- Iowa - Not regulated.
- Kansas - Not regulated.
- Kentucky - Not regulated.
- Louisiana - Not regulated.
- Maine - Not regulated.
- Maryland - Not regulated.
- Massachusetts - Not regulated.
- Michigan - Not regulated.
- Minnesota - Not regulated, BUT - hanging
things from windshields not permitted. (Hmm. Wonder. Does this include
rear-view mirrors, too? [grin])

- Montana - Not regulated.
- Nebraska - Not regulated.
- Nevada - Not regulated.
- New Hampshire - Not regulated.

- Virginia - REVISED 1998! -
Sounds like VA is changing thier tactics regarding RD confiscation. I'm
getting reports now that they're taking the detectors back to the vehicle
to record serial numbers but that they're handing them back to motorists.
Sounds like somebody make waves, and they're trying not to make them
bigger. 8-)
