!PARENTS-FATHER-MOTHER: Actual parents not yet known. ACTION: Find
parents.

!BIRTH: About 1820 (est.), Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland [Marine Death
Cert., where age at death listed as "50 years"; location of birth from
interviews with Muriel E. (Gregory) Sterner]. ACTION: Find actual birth
records.

!BAPTISM: Unknown date/location. ACTION: Find baptismal record.

!RESIDENCES:
1859: 18 Holt Street, Edge Hill, Liverpool, England [GORE'S DIRECTORY
            OF LIVERPOOL, 1859].

!OCCUPATION: Baker [interviews with Muriel E. (Gregory) Sterner]; "Baker,
18 Holt Street, Edge Hill" [GORE'S DIRECTORY OF LIVERPOOL, 1859 - RESEARCHER:
John Lauper, of London, England (at e-mail: j.lauper@irep.maff.gov.uk)]; was
a "Baker at Sea" [description on back of Robert Tolmie, Sr. photo in poss. of
Muriel E. (Gregory) Sterner]. FILE: PHOTOS.TXT].

!MARRIAGE-NOTE-QUESTION: Possibly married 22 Nov 1841, Gorbals, Lanark,
Scotland - if this is same person [LDS IGI and Scotland IGI; RESEARCHER:
Vivienne S. Dunstan, of St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland, researching Renfrewshire
records (e-mail: vivienne@dcs.st-andrews.demon.co.uk).

!CHILDREN: Had at least two sons [Family Registry - "Robert Tolmie, second
son of Robert"]. A "James" and "Agnes" are listed in the Scotland IGI [from
reseearch by Colin Wilson, Vivienne S. Dunstan]. "James" mentioned as being
a "son" in the Will of Agnes Tolmie ("Widow of Robert Tolmie, Baker") [copy
in poss. of Todd L. Sherman], along with a "Margaret Brown Tolmie - wife of
William Tolmie", mentioned as a "daughter", but suspect she may have meant
"daughter-in-law" instead? BUT, in Margaret's Will, she lists her mother as
"Agnes Tolmie". So, it is possible we're talking about cousins marrying
here. ACTION: Find Will of William Tolmie, Robert Tolmie, Sr., Lilias
Fisher to see if they might list some clues to this?

!DEATH: 24 April 1870, at age "50 years", of "dysentery", aboard the steam
ship MV ALEPPO while on voyage from New York to Liverpool. [MARINE DEATHS
REGISTER, 1865-1875; 1865-1870; p. 358; St. Catherine's House, London -
certified copy in poss. of Todd L. Sherman; RESEARCHER: John Lauper (London,
England, at e-mail: j.lauper@irep.maff.gov.uk)]. COMMENT: Colin Wilson
(Scotland, at e-mail: colin@cwsoft.demon.co.uk) also checked the Marine
Registers at the SRO in Scotland and could not find anything listed there.

!OBITUARY: Not yet found. ACTION: Find obituary.

!BURIAL: "Buried at sea" [description on back of Robert Tolmie, Sr. photo
in poss. of Muriel E. (Gregory) Sterner - FILE: PHOTOS.TXT; Marine Death
Cert., GRO, London, England - copy in poss. of Todd L. Sherman].

!PROBATE-WILL: Will not yet obtained. ACTION: Find Will.

!COMMENT: (Thoughts) -
ROBERT TOLMIE, SR. Was a Baker; and a "Baker at Sea" [Robert, Sr.
photo.; 1859 GORE'S DIRECTORY OF LIVERPOOL]. Worked at the "Glasgow
Bakery," a catering firm, at "32, Stanley Road, Bootle" in Liverpool,
England [Glasgow Bakery business card]. Family legend has it that
this firm baked the last Duke of Edinburgh's wedding cake [Muriel E.
(Gregory) Sterner; also scrap paper found with Anne Tolmie's handwriting].
Unknown whether a Tolmie hand had anything to do with actually making
or baking the cake in any way. Also not known whether cake was actually
contracted for by the Duke's company, or if cake was a spur-of-the-moment
donation in respect of the Duke (we shouldn't jump to conclusions, though
it is currently being looked into). Born in Edinburgh, Scotland [Muriel
Sterner]. Estimate born 1820 [from age of death listed on Death Cert.].
Husband of Agnes Fisher. Date of death was 24 April 1870. He died of
"dysyntery" at the age of 50 aboard the steamship `MV Aleppo', which was
enroute to Liverpool from New York City [Marine Death Cert.]. Robert was
"buried at sea" [scrap paper; back of Robert Tolmie, Sr. photo]. He
married Agnes Fisher, who we assume was born somewhere in Scotland [no
evidence to support this]. Agnes was the sister of Sarah Powell (Clarke)
Scott, who was married to William Scott. Sarah was the eldest daughter
of Henry E. Clarke, of H.M. Customs, Greenock, Scotland [card: "In Memory
Of SARAH POWELL SCOTT"; back is written "Grammy Smith's sister"]. Robert's
parents are not definitely known at the time of this writing.
