NOTES: Robert TOLMIE, Jr.
--------------------------

PLEASE NOTE:

A lot of the information that I was able to get ahold of came from
the backs of some old pictures, business cards, etc., that Muriel
Sterner had in her possession.

Born in (Edinburgh or Edinborough), Scotland - according to Muriel
(Gregory) Sterner. However, the Family Registers, kept by the family,
state that Robert was "formerly of Glasgow." So, possible he/they
moved from Glasgow with his father to Liverpool.

Found in amoungst the old papers, letters and pictures in a box that
belonged to Murial Elaine Gregory Sterner were the following items on
the Tolmies:

- Tolmie Bakery Business card (was torn in half as found):

o On the front of the card:

                             GLASGOW BAKERY
                             ------\\------

                         --# TERMS MODERATE #--

      - Also, written across the front of the card in someone's
        handwriting was:

                Left in 1897
                (Landed in U.S. Dec. 1897)

o On the back, hand-written in cursive:

                                          His firm
                        Tolmie + made the last

So, above we have proof of all of the children in the Robert/Lydia
Tolmie family.

- What looks like a SCROLL. This item is EXTREMELY brittle. The stick
around which the papers are wrapped is 8-1/2" long (21-1/2 centimeters)
by 3/4" wide (1-1/2 centimeters). There is an outer grey document wrapped
around more white papers underneath it. The grey paper is Anne Tolmie's
Birth Registration Certificate (original) [see notes for Anne Tolmie for
description]. The inner white document is the Marriage Certificate of
Robert Tolmie Jr. and Lydia Smallwood Smith (the original - for description
of actual text see description of the COPY above).

o The white papers wrapped underneath the outer grey paper are the
ORIGINAL Marriage Certificate for the Robert Tolmie/Lydia Smith
marriage. It had been torn into three pieces, apparently deliber-
ately, so that the Certificate would fit around the wooden dowel.
The top torn half of the Certificate had again been torn in half
to make two pieces, while the leftover bottom portion of the Cer-
tificate made up the third part as a longer piece.

The following books were found in the bookshelf of Murial Gregory
Sterner at home.

1) Lydia Smith Bible:

o Back inside cover newspaper clipping:

TOLMIE-SMITH--May 21, by license, at the Queen's-road United Pres-
byterian Church, by the Rev. H.T. Howat. Mr. Robert Tolmie, 100,
Everton-road, to Lydia Smallwood, fifth daughter of Mr. John Smith,
late of Higher Bebington, and granddaughter of the late Mr. A.E.
Clarke, late of her Majesty's customs, Greenock. (Scotch papers
  please copy.)

o Front inside cover newspaper clipping about the reception for the
     Tolmie's silver wedding anniversary -- The "PATERSON N.J. U.S.A."
across the top, and "21st MAY 1900" along the bottom were hand-
written by someone. Another duplicate of the same clipping was
found in amoungst the boxes of papers also in the possession of
     Murial Gregory Sterner:

  PATERSON --- N.J. U.S.A.
A very pleasant reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Tolmie, Rip Van Winkle avenue, on Monday evening last, when
over forty of thier friends came to help them celebrate thier sil-
ver wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Tolmie came to this country
from England a little over two years ago, and have resided most of
the time named, in Haledon, where, judging from the presence of the
many friends, who so readily responded to Mr. and Mrs. Tolmie's in-
vitation, is proof of the popularity and esteem in which they are
held. One interesting feature of the evening was the presenting of
a very handsome silver cake basket, by the members of the Lady's
Aid society of Cedar Cliff M. E. church, and a very pretty gold and
opal pin, by Joseph Atkinson, superintendent of the above Sunday
school. The host and hostess were the recipients of many other
substantial presents in silver. The following is a list of those
present: Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Atkinson, Rev. W. W. Vanderhoff, Mrs.
Vanderhoff, Miss Edna Vanderhoff, Mr. and Mrs. Robert McQuillan,
Mr. and Mrs. John Mutler, John Ross, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Chambers,
Mr. and Mrs. Courter, Mrs. Rude, Mrs. Bartlett, Mr. and Mrs. Archi-
bald Love, Miss Mary Love, Miss Lizzie Love, Miss A. Donaldson, Mr.
and Mrs. H. E. Planck, Clifford Myers, Mr. O'Harra, Mr. and Mrs.
Freudenthal, Misses Teressa and Jennie McBride, Lillie Pierce of
Orange, S. Percy Brown of Maplewood, Mr. Goldsmith and Mr. Styne of
New York state, Mrs. James Bratt, Mrs. Hart, Mrs. John Sweet, Mr.
and Mrs. W. H. Bratt of Newark, Misses Alice Ruth and Edith Bratt,
  Mrs. Nettie Bratt.
  21st MAY ------------------------------------- 1900

o Between back cover and last page was slipped a funeral notice on
a white card with black trim - with very beautiful "doily-like"
     designs:

                              In Memory Of
                           SARAH POWELL SCOTT
Relict of the late William Scott, of Port Glasgow, and eldest daughter
of the late Henry E. Clarke, of H.M. Customs, Greenock,
Who Departed this Life March 15, 1864,
                             AGED 61 YEARS,
And was interred at Lower Bebington Church, March 20th, 1864.

So, evidently, Sarah was the sister of Lydia Smith's mother (or so I
gather), since, on the back of the card, barely legible, were scrib-
  bled the words:

                                        "Grammy Smith's
                                         sister --"

2) Annie A. (Tolmie) Gregory Bible:

o Newspaper clippings affixed to inside cover:

Mrs. Robert Tolmie, of 265 Walnut street, sailed on Saturday for <--- See article in re.
Europe. She will return in October. (1905)

                                  ---

beloved husband of Lydia S. Tolmie, and father of Mrs. A.H. Gregory,
Captain E.F. Tolmie and Percy C. Tolmie, in his 75th year. Funeral
private, on Wednesday, from the parlors of Honeywell & Painter. <--- [This would be 1 Sep 1920.]

                                  ---

  TOLMIE--On April 20, 1922, Lydia S., beloved mother of Mrs. A.H.
Gregory, Captain E.F. Tolmie and Percy C. Tolmie, in her 68th year.
Relatives and friends, also the officers and members of Roseville
Chapter No. 43, O.E.S., are invited to attend the funeral services
at her home, 158 North Third Street, on Saturday, April 22, at 2:30
  P.M. Internment in Fairmount Cemetary.

o Hand-written on back of facepage of Bible shows who the Bible
was handed down to along the way:

                Annie A. Gregory
                 25 Feby 1922
From Mother. <--- (Lydia Smallwood Smith Tolmie)

                     --- "

                Murial E. Gregory
From Mother <--- (Anne Agnes Tolmie Gregory)
                Search the Scriptures
                for in them ye think
                ye have Eternal Life.

o Inside back cover of Bible, another newspaper clipping:

  GREGORY--On December 8, 1909, Winthrop W., only son of Allen H. and
Annie A. Gregory, aged 9 days. Internment at Fairmount Cemetary this
  afternoon.

3) Robert Tolmie's hymnal book, "Wesley's Hymns":

o Inside cover, a label, typed, "Robert Tolmie"

  o First blank page:

                      Mrs. Tolmie
                      24th April 1890
                      from R.T.

o Also slipped inside the book are 1) a poem clipped out of a newspaper
     dated January 30, 1886, called "TO A TIRED MOTHER" - author anonymous;
and 2) a hand-written poem titled "Friendship," which I'm guessing was
written by Lydia Smallwood Smith, since she was the poet in the family.
