Sarah Defends Lilith Fair

Mirrorball Sucess 20 Questions with Sarah McLachlan Custom CD No Boudaries

Sarah Defends Lilith Fair NEW YORK (AP) -- Sarah McLachlan wants to make one thing clear about the Lilith Fair -- it's not a concert for "white chicks."
Asked what stereotype about the all-female music festival bothered her, the singer said: "That it's a white chick folkfest.

"We invited artists who play all different kinds of music, but because of who said yes, it became this 'White Chick with an Acoustic Guitar' thing," she says in the August edition of Spin magazine.

One of the artists at last year's fair was rapper Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. McLachlan, the founder of the Lilith Fair, said Elliott was the biggest diva of the festival.

"She was actually very sweet, but her whole production was kinda closed off. Backstage, I approach everyone and try and talk to them a bit, but it just didn't happen," said McLachlan. "It was a real us-and-them attitude, which was a drag because I was really excited about her."

McLachlan says this year's Lilith Fair tour, beginning July 8, will be the last. Besides McLachlan, acts include Sheryl Crow, Monica and the Dixie Chicks.

20 Questions with Sarah McLachlan By MIKE ROSS Express Writer

Sarah McLachlan is a woman who needs no introduction - but since we have to fill some space before this week's 20 questions game, here it is anyway.

Only 31 years old and with a tendency to swear like a sailor, Canada's most successful diva next to Celine Dion has already accumulated a lifetime of achievement.

Called "the dark angel" (by us), she's sold millions of albums on the strength of a beautiful, ethereal voice and confessional songwriting style. Her latest album is a live one, Mirrorball, and you can catch the special by the same name tonight at 8 on CTV (Cable 2). She has won countless awards, including a pair of Grammys in 1998. She's the founder of a hugely successful, all-female package tour called Lilith Fair, which makes its last stop in Edmonton on Aug. 31. After that, she's taking a break to start a family.

U.S. President Bill Clinton is even a fan, according to the infamous Starr Report: "When I was hiding out in your office for a half-hour, I noticed you had the new Sarah McLachlan CD," Monica Lewinsky is quoted.

However that nasty copyright trial turns out, McLachlan will surely remain one of Canada's most beloved recording artists. Here's a peek inside the mind of everyone's favourite Lilith Fairy:

The 16-track album will feature rare, live and previously unreleased special versions of songs by some of the most popular and acclaimed artists on the international music scene. The artists confirmed to appear on ``No Boundaries'' are Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, Alanis Morrisette, Neil Young, Oasis, KoRn, Black Sabbath, Indigo Girls, Ben Folds Five, Peter Gabriel, The Wallflowers, Sarah McLachlan, Bush, Tori Amos, and Jamiroquai.

The single arrives in stores June 8 and includes the B-side ``Soldier Of Love,'' a live version of the song written and first recorded by Arthur Alexander. ``Last Kiss'' and ``Soldier of Love'' were released initially as the 1998 Pearl Jam Fan Club Christmas single and distributed free to fan club members only. Both tracks are included on ``No Boundaries.''

Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis says: ``Pearl Jam is proud to offer this small contribution to help improve the appalling conditions of the refugees suffering from this human rights tragedy in Kosovo.''

In advance of the album release date and based on projected sales of ``No Boundaries,'' Epic Records will make an initial donation of $1,000,000 to be distributed among three international aid organizations--CARE, OXFAM, and Doctors Without Borders--all of which are working now to provide food, shelter, medical care and other basic needs to the Kosovo refugees. Further donations derived from worldwide sales of ``No Boundaries'' will be made to these organizations.

``This album is the first collective response by the international music community to the crisis in Kosovo,'' says David Glew, Chairman of the Epic Records Group. ``'No Boundaries' is an outstanding collection of music, created in support of a vital cause.''
