Dear AORN Chapter Members,

Our chapter installation ceremony was held on June 15, 2000 at La Margarita’s in Gainesville. Those members in attendance were: Nan Hanauer, Jim Shelley, Patricia Stewart, Ginny Nelson, Stephanie Reitman-Swiss, Tom Macheski, John Oberlies, Eileen Nogueiras, Terry Glover, Linda Pittman, Linda Sigsby, Emma Young, and Camille Beregrasster. Many of the members had family attending with them. After an enjoyable dinner, the installation ceremony was held.

The valued services of the out-going committee members and officers were recognized. They were thanked for their fulfillment of the organizational goals and were given gifts by Patricia Stewart. The out-going officer was Emma Young and the out-going committee members were Jim Shelley, Terry Glover, and Camille Bergstraesser [Jim North was not able to attend].

The chapter officers and members of the Nominating Committee and Board of Directors were installed. Candles were used in the ceremony. John Oberlies was installed to the Nominating Committee [Carol Raym and Chris Toigo were unable to attend]. The Nominating Committee’s candle color was blue. The color blue was chosen since blue signifies Truth and Wisdom. The Nominating Committee members need Wisdom to seek out members that will best lead our chapter, and be Truthful and sincere in their selection. The Nominating Committee members’ qualifications and duties must be seriously considered for upon the right leadership depends the success of our chapter.

The Board of Directors installed were Ginny Nelson, Eileen Nogueiras and Linda Sigsby. The Board of Director’s candle color was Silver. Silver symbolizes Purity and Valor, and as members of the Board of Directors they must possess Pureness and clearness in their decision making for our chapter. They must also have the Courage to stand by their decisions.

Stephanie Reitman-Swiss was installed as Treasurer of our chapter. Her candle was white, which denotes complete Truthfulness and Honesty. She has the most trustworthy position in our chapter. She will be the keeper of our funds and assets. Jim Shelley was installed as President-elect. His candle was the color orange since orange signifies Loyalty. As president-elect Jim is the right hand of the president and will help her whenever necessary. A purple candle was given to Nan Hanauer. Purple symbolizes Leadership and Power. Nan is the Leader of our chapter and has the Power to carry out the business of our chapter. Nan will use her talents and abilities to organize the year’s work, motivate our volunteers, and lead and work with enthusiasm. Nan was then given the chapter’s gavel with colored ribbons from all the officers and committees. Patricia Stewart then congratulated the membership for their selection of the officers and committee members. She also expressed her personal appreciation of work of past officers and chapter volunteers.

Patricia Stewart recognized Tom Macheski for his work as Membership Committee Chair and his efforts with the summer FCORN seminar and fund raising. Other members recognized for their chapter fund raising were Stephanie Reitman-Swiss, Linda Pittman and Camille Bergstraesser. The following recognition of the accomplishments of the chapter members were announced: our chapter has 78 CNOR [3 this year], and 9 RNFA [1 this year], Camille Bergstraesser will graduate this December as a Family Nurse Practitioner, has been our chapter Historian since 1998, and has been inducted into the Nursing Honor Society Sigma Theta Tau. Nan Hanauer has been elected to the Board of Directors of the ARON Leadership Specialty Assembly, our chapter received the AORN National President’s Award [Articles submitted by Patricia Stewart, Linda Sigsby, Tom Macheski, Linda Pittman, and Camille Bergstraesser]. Tom Macheski was elected chair-elect to FCORN, and the Nursing Honor Society Sigma Theta Tau, Stephanie Reitman-Swiss was elected to the Board of Directors of FCORN, and Linda Sigsby was newsletter editor of the International Congress Woman’s Health, Chair of the bylaws committee of Sigma Theta Tau, and Board of Directors of the International Congress of Woman’s Health Issues. Linda has also done several presentations and written several chapters for a major medical surgical textbook.

Patricia Stewart presented the twelve attributes of a leader from Shelia Murray Bethel’s book Making a Difference: A LEADER has a mission that matters, is a big thinker, has high ethics, is a change master, is sensitive, is a risk taker, is a decision maker, uses power wisely, communicates effectively, is a team builder, is courageous, and is committed. The membership presented Patricia Stewart a plaque thanking her for her commitment to thechapter during this past year, and a warm up jacket.

In honor of the Chapter Scholarships, which were initiated this year, two $50.00 checks were presented to the chapter. One check was from industry representative Sheila Smotherman [Guidant], and one check was from Patricia Stewart.

Patricia Stewart adjourned the meeting at 9 0’clock.
