Students may wear t-shirts representing a Black College or University
Race Relations Day:
Say "Hello" to someone of the opposite race that you have NEVER met before.
February 17th
African exhibit in the Media Center:
Teachers may take their classes to the Media Center to view the exhibit.
February 24th
Essay Contest:
Last day to turn in your Essay to Language Arts Teachers.
February 25th
Corn row contest ......(Hair braiding)
Any student with the fanciest hair braids
February 27th
African Attire Fashion Show
Students who are interested in attending may sign up with homeroom teacher
First Grade Activities
Posters with African American Historians and discuss what they accomplished.
Students made mini-books about Martin Luther King, Jr's life and listened to stories about his life. They
also listened to Dr. Kings "I have a dream" speech.
An introduction to Kwanzaa was also presented to the students.
5th Grade (Parham)
Reading Class (SFA): Reading "Amos Fortune" by Elizabeth Yates.
Slavery is the central issue in this book. Discussed slavery in the U.S. How it started and why.
How long it lasted and how it ended. Also discussed living conditions of the slaves and how it differed
from North to South. How it felt to be a slave.
5th Grade (Middleton)
Regular classroom: Reading the book "Sounder" by William Armstrong.
A tale of a young black boy. The boy endures the pain, humiliation, and anger of his father being jailed
unjustly. The boy is befriended by a black teacher who changes his life by learning to read.
He learns things do not just die, but become part of other things. This brings new hope to the boy.
Activity:
Research the court decision to end segregated schools in 1954. Brown vs the Board of Education.
Compare schools of the late 19th century for black and white students.
Melrose Elementary School
Activities for Black history month will be incorporated into the schools Process Writing lessons.
The "I Have A Dream" speech was used to have students discuss, write, and draw what their
dreams would be for our country.
School wide the music teacher will spotlight black individuals who have significant impact in the field
of music(i.e. Louis Armstrong).
Additionally there are programs going on through the year that focus on acceptance of cultural diversity
and tolerance of other beliefs.
