Edwin Reese Powell and family
Edwin Reese Powell
1849-1881
Generation No. 1

1.  EDWIN REESE6 POWELL (THOMAS WHITEHEAD5, HARRISON4, WILLOUGHBY3, NATHANIEL2, RICHARD1) was born April 16, 1849 in Boxville, KY (Bernice Turner de los Rios, granddaughter of Edwin, noted birthplace as Boxville, but research of great-great granddaughter MELINDA S. KASHUBA notes Corydon as the place of family residence; this according to the 1850 Federal Census).  He married ARBELIA ALICE ORSBURN September 27, 1871, daughter of John Orsburn and Nancy Whitsell.

Edwin  died May 01, 1881 in Henderson Co KY, after having nursed a cousin with the same affliction.    He left a widow and four young children:  WALTER ORSBURN; EDNA EARLE; NELLE (HELEN) BERNADINE; AND CLEOPATRA JACQUELIN.

An oil portrait, painted before Edwin's death, shows that he had a bushy  auburn beard and moustache, a receded hairline, and a pale face with deep-set eyes that seemed to burn with intensity.  The portrait is now in the possession of EDUARD (ARTHUR) DE LOS RIOS, great grandson of Edwin.  The above photo was taken about 1879-1880, before youngest daughter, Jacquelin was born.

Melinda's research states Edwin and brother THOMAS M. POWELL were partners in a mercantile business in Corydon, Kentucky during the 1870's; however, an 1880 Federal Census merely notes him as a farmer with no mention of another involvement.
