Served in Revolutionary War and received 13 wounds at the battle of Buford's Defeat. Was taken prisoner at Hanging Rock, SC. As a result of his injuries, a silver plate as placed in his head. For the rest of his life, he bore the imprint of a horse's hoof on his back, received as he lay on the battle field severly wounded and unconscious.
