Rebellion is way too damn hard to pick up and play. And I thought "mousing" was hard to pick up... Rebellion totally kicked my ass the first few times I tried to play it.

PC Gamer rated Jedi Knight as Game of the Year for 1997 in the most recent issue. I found it most interesting, because (at least for me) it renewed an interesting question: which game, Quake2 or Jedi Knight, is truly superior?

There are several ways to attack this: single-player vs. multi-player, differing design poilices, differing backgrounds (Jedi Knight had the benefit of a largely complete and rich universe to set itself into, whereas Quake relied on the tried and true id formula plot: "Lone Space Marine vs. Hordes of Evil"), differing styles of gameplay, different interfaces (point and click vs. command line servers), differing multiplayer capacities and most importantly, differing stages of completeness.

If you want all the long, drawn out details you can read any of the dozens of articles detailing the differences between the games at any decent game news site. I, however, will judge Jedi Knight to be the better game OVERALL than Quake 2 because:

-It reeks of professionalism. It was just atmospheric, true to the Star Wars Universe, the levels were a stroke of genius (especially the crashing ship level) and the sounds were great.

-It didn't require any patching. Quake 2, like it or not, was an incomoplete product and less than expected in some ways.

-It introduced two new areas of gameplay: sword battles and force powers. These, used in the right combination, renders gun battles obsolete.

-It has great cinematics and a real storyline, other than "Lone survivor of Marine task force must destroy all in his quest to end the Strogg domination of Earth."

Jedi is a unique variation on the standard FPS, while Quake2 is merely an improvement on tried-and-true techniques. This is not to say that Quake2 is not without merit (it's textures and game engine was far superior, colored lighting looks GREAT), but overall I must say Jedi is the superior overall game.

Topic of discussion today: Gaming Idiots--more specifically, people whose skill-to-shit talking ratio is so low they make asses of themselves and their clan.

I'm sure you guys know of someone like this: He thinks he's top shit, likes to rub in the fact that they placed in so-and-so position in a match, or likes to tell anecdotes about how they pulled off "this amazing kill." When you're talking about how you did something in a game, and he interrupts with "No, the best is when I..." or "I've got something even better than that..." He likes to talk shit during matches and always rubs it in when other players who usually do better than him fail. He never compliments others on their successes, he only gives excuses for his "sub-par performance" and/or complains about how he was dicked over either by the computer or by other players. If by chance he happens to win a DM or a game, he'll never let go of that instance when his true glory shone through and all were utterly wasted.

These people completely destroy any sense of sportsmanship in the game. They ignore the fact that even though you're killing people online, it really is meant to be friendly competition. Bitching about lag, complaining about how game settings skew the game, excessively bragging about kills, ridiculuing players, rubbing errors in, failing to compliment or answer, making empty challenges -- these all make an ass out of you and your clan. Some argue bitching and bragging add character to the game. I say that it doesn't make anyone else have more fun, rather I think it makes it worse for everyone. Not surprisingly, these people are favored targets, drawing the ire of their fellow players. I know I personally love fragging egotistical, bitchy bastards.

I am speaking to everyone here, not just one person: Play with some class. Nobody likes Gaming Idiots, and I trust the members of this clan and other clans will avoid being one as much as possible.

The opinions expressed here are the opinions of the individual authors themselves and not necessarily that of Clan UFL or the University of Florida.
