The Genealogical Society of Gainesville, Florida, was formed
in1973 with 35 chartermembers. In 1980 the name was changed to the
Alachua County Genealogical Societyand incorporated under the laws
of the state of Florida as a non-profit organization.

Membership Information
Membership in ACGS entitles you to attend all activities
sponsored by the Society, to receive our quarterly and newsletter.
Won't You Join Us?
Meetings
Meetings are held every 3rd Monday, 7:00 p.m. at
Alachua County Library District Headquarters Library, 401 East University Avenue
(no
meetings June, July, August). Program topics, activities and changes are
announced to members through the newsletter and the quarterly.
Quarterly & Newsletter
Both the ACGS Quarterly, 'Latchua Country News, and
the society'sNewsletter, 'Latchua Notes, are provided free to members.
The 'Latchua Country News is published in March,
June, September and December andACGS members are encouraged to submit
queries for publication as well as Bible and cemetery records, biographies,
letters, or anything pertaining to genealogy.
Back issues are available for most volumes.
'Latchua Notes is mailed to members periodically
on an as needed basis.
Research Aids
Alachua County Surname Index lists surnames of all
ACGS members from the years 1988-1991. Listing is free to members. List
is currently being revised to include new members since 1991. See our
Publications
List for other research aids.
Resource Collection
Throughout the years ACGS has donated materials to the
Alachua County Library District. The 700+ volume genealogy collection housed at
the Headquarters Library in downtown Gainesville includes: Alachua County Cemetery
Survey (completed in 1966), Gainesville Sun Obituary file index, microfilms
of Gainesville Sun (some as early as 1880's, plus other bits of Gainesville
newspapers (not the Sun) that are as early as1863); Florida Census (1830-1930),
FL State Censuses (1885 & 1935), Bureau of Vital Statistics Florida Death,
Marriage & Divorce index on microfiche, local City Directories, local
and major city phone directories, bound transcribed copies of Alachua County
Census (1830-1880) and Inter-Library loan services through HeritageQuest.
Education
General membership meetings are designed to aid both the
beginner and advanced genealogist. Periodic special programs are planned
to enhance the society's image, i.e., seminars, library trips, etc. Watch
for announcements of our special programs in the Activities section above.
Donations
Contributions to ACGS of monies and materials are tax deductible
and receipts will be issued to donors, upon request, at face value.
