    TRENTON AFFAIR:

This was a good show in a small town with a really nice setting. Located under towering old oak trees at the Ayers Health Center in Trenton, this annual show sponsored by the Suwanee River Early Ford Club played host to about 50 cars. There was food, live music, dancers, terrific prizes and a good crowd. The residents at Ayers Center seemed to particularly enjoy seeing the cars of their youth.

For us first timers, the show was a tad hard to find, but after a full tour of the Trenton metropolitan area and having to resort to asking for directions, most of us finally made it. (You know its got to be difficult when a male breaks down and asks for directions.) AACA members were exceptionally well represented, with many familiar faces. Among those in attendance with ties to our AACA Region were Larry and Patty Galyean, Frank Wheelus (the 50/50 guy), Joe Dixon (a Trenton mainstay), Bob Grimes, Dave Johnson, Donna and Lester McKee, and our ex-presidents Dave Quinn, Sherwin Karsh and his wife Helen. We got a chance to chat quite a bit with faces we don't see too often. Helen gave me the low down on their trip to Hawaii, complete with photos. Dave Quinn is contemplating retirement, a subject that is dear to us, but sometimes not what it seems.

Larry won an elaborate gas powered fish cooker and folding chairs; Donna won a door knocker, a photo album, and 4 door lock sets. Quite a haul by any standard.

    ANCIENT CITY AACA SHOW:

Mike Whyte reports that he and Paul Zimmerman attended the 16th annual car show on May 27 in St. Augustine. The Ancient City Auto Club Region of AACA was the sponsor of this event. It was reported that both Mike and Paul took home trophies in their classes. There were about 125 cars in the show with 23 classes available. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies were awarded as appropriate.

    NEW WEB SITE:
    AndSmile Consulting

Computer guru Gerald Cullen called a few days ago to report that he is constructing a new internet site for our club. It is far from complete and is waiting on the editor to supply some photos and other data, including current newsletters. The site can be accessed using: WWW.AFN.ORG/~Antique

There are some nice links to National, etc. So if you have an interest like some of us multi-disciplined folks, give it a whirl and contact Gerald with comments and suggestions using E-mail addressed to GVILLE@AFN.ORG or call 371-5805.

    MAY AT SEMOLINA'S:

One of the best turn outs we've had. We had to keep adding tables and we filled the room. Larry kept the meeting short and to the point so that we could give our speaker ample time.

Semolina's wanted to try taking orders after everyone was there ... that didn't work very well. Larry is requesting a return to the "order as you arrive" method. It's faster and improves the flow of the meeting.

Jim Buffington gave a brief overview of the annual show given at Cairo, Georgia on Mother's Day. Jim won for Best GM Car with his classy 1957 Cadillac.

    HEAR YE, HEAR YE:

It may have seemed like a strange topic for an old car club, but IT WAS and IS relevant. We're talking about hearing problems ... a topic that was probably discussed by quest speaker Ernest Walden who is also a Beltone representative. Because we frequently work and "play" in high noise environments that are associated with car activities, we are at some risk. And, the problems are cumulative. Repeated exposure to loud noise can lead to diminished hearing over time.

Mr. Walden encouraged each of us to get tested to establish a "base line" so that any future loss of hearing can be quantified.

So, when you pound out those metal parts, use power tools or make that engine roar consider using hearing protection. It's hard to remember, but it could save your hearing today ... and later in life.

EXERCISE COMMENTARY; READ BEFORE YOU START

My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 now and we don't know where the heck she is.

The only reason I would take up jogging is so I could hear heavy breathing again.

I joined a health club last year and spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up.

I have to exercise in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

I don't exercise at all. If God meant us to touch our toes, he would have put them further up our body.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The only advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.

If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a very small country.

I don't jog. It makes the ice jump right out of my glass.

    Source unknown ... thank goodness!

    FOR SALE! FOR SALE!

Sherwin bought a 1965 and a 1966 Ford Thunderbird that were owned by a Ford dealer in Pittsburgh. He would like to sell the 1965 Bird so he can concentrate on the other one.

The '65 Bird is a 2 door Hardtop Landau that has been in storage since 1976. It's all original, but it is sporting new brakes & front end parts, and the radiator, fuel pump and carb have been rebuilt. He's asking $7,500 or best (reasonable) offer.

If you have an interest, call Sherwin at (352) 473-2268.

    RUMOR HAS IT:

Don McCullen's trip to the AACA Eastern National Spring meet in Winchester, Virginia netted him a 1st Junior on his "new" Jaguar.

Speaking of Don, he and Donna have a new 39 foot Southwind motorhome. We think Don needs to add a London double decker bus and a B-52 bomber to go with his fleet. Or, how about some early bicycles and a buggy to round things out? As they say ... life's about boys and their toys ... but, Don's toy box is bigger than most. Given a chance, most of us would do the same thing if we could.

Congratulations on your trophy, your motorhome, and being a grandpa.

    WHAT'S A CLASSIC CAR?

We often hear the term "classic car", but most of the world uses the term to define almost any car that's old and looks reasonably good. Actually, the Classic Car Club of America has a much narrower and reasonable approach to the definition. The CCCA defines Full Classic Cars as "...fine or unusual motor cars which were built between and including the years 1925 to 1948. These very special cars are distinguished by their respective fine design, high engineering standards and superior workmanship." The cars were usually quite expensive when new and had relatively low production figures.

The CCCA lists 105 different nameplates that have models that can qualify for the "Full Classic" designation. But, 25 of those nameplates will be considered only by application for your specific vehicle.

Many well recognized "classic" nameplates are loaded with examples, but not every model can carry the "classic" designation. All Duesenburgs, Cords, Blackhawks, Stutz, and Rolls-Royce cars of the period carry the "Full Classic" tag. Cadillac and Packard are well represented, but there are specific inclusions so that not all can be considered for the classic title. Names like Kissel, Auburn, Chrysler, Lincoln, Marmon, Peerless, and Bugatti have many models included, but not all. By CCCA definition, certain models of the Hudson, Nash, Studebaker, Willys-Knight, Sunbeam and Triumph also make the cut.

For a full listing of the "classics" check out the CCCA internet site at WWW.classiccarclub.org (or your can access them through the AACA web site).

Just as AACA is restricted to unmodified cars over 25 years old, the CCCA has even tighter restrictions as to age and specifics. Each club has it's constituency, and there are probably many CCCA people who are also AACA members.
