SLIP/PPP Parameters
This page describes how to configure your choice of SLIP/PPP software
with the necessary networking parameters. If you are unfamiliar
with SLIP/PPP we suggest you use one of our pre-prepared packages.
This page is intended for experienced and knowledgble folks.
You can use any commercially available SLIP or PPP software package to
connect to AFN. These packages are often available at bookstores or
computer stores around town. There is also freely available software on
the net at various locations. You are welcome to use any software you
want, but realize that AFN can not help you with any problems except for
the packages we officially support (Winsock Freenet and MacPPP).
Here are the various parameters you will need to configure on your end:
- Phone number: 334-0200
- Netmask: 255.255.255.0
- DNS Nameserver: 128.227.163.5
- Secondary DNS Nameserver: 128.227.128.24
- Your IP address: Assigned dynamically, can be different
each time. PPP software should automatically get the IP address. When doing
SLIP, the terminal server will respond with:
Local address is 128.227.163.X. Your address is 128.227.163.Y.
- SLIP/PPP server address: Assigned dynamically, can be
different each time (see above).
- Default route: Should be the SLIP/PPP server
address (see above).
- Usenet news server: usenet.afn.org
- SMTP server: smtp.afn.org
- POP server: pop3.afn.org
- IMAP server: imap.afn.org
- Ph server: ns.afn.org
- IRC server: irc.afn.org
- The system supports BOOTP querys, but only returns local (terminal
server), remote (you), and boot server addresses.
- The system supports VJ header compression with SLIP. This
is often referred to as compressed SLIP or CSLIP.
