SLIP/PPP Homepage
SLIP and PPP are two communication protocols which allow a computer connected to a server via a serial line (such as a modem) to become an actual node on the internet. This allows you to run network applications on your home computer directly.
With a SLIP/PPP feed and the right software on your computer, you can not only run graphical web browsing software, you can also FTP files directly to your computer, store your mail on your computer, and perform many other functions.
Alachua Freenet supports both SLIP and PPP access, as well as continuing to support our standard menu interface.
You must be a registered AFN user to access SLIP/PPP. You can not use the "visitor" account to do SLIP or PPP, you must login interactively to the "visitor" account to register on AFN.
Telnet and rlogin access to hosts at the University of Florida are not permited.
Connections to AFN's IRC server are no longer restricted -- we encourage IRC users to run clients locally (on their home systems), to lessen the load on the main Freenet hosts.
Connections to AFN's IRC server (irc.afn.org) are not restricted for
SLIP/PPP users. We encourage IRC users to run clients locally on their
home computers, to lessen the load on the main Freenet host computers.
Only direct dial-up users may run the IRC client in AFN's menu system.
Telnet users are no longer allowed to use IRC. So if you use SLIP or PPP,
you will need to download an IRC client.
All SLIP/PPP sessions are limited to one hour at a time.
The best way to get this software is to stop by the Alachua County Library District Headquarters (downtown Gainesville). For $1 you get a single 3.5" 1.44M diskette with the pre-configured software and a handout that describes the installation procedure. The $1 covers duplicating expenses.
The software is also available via anonymous FTP from ftp.afn.org under the /pub/wfn/ directory.
For more information, visit the WINSOCK Freenet Home Page.
In the meantime, you maybe able to solve your problems by simply upgrading the version of PPP being used to FreePPP 2.5rf which is located at any Info-Mac mirror site. You can try getting it from here, which is Apple's own mirror site.
The packages are also available via anonymous FTP from ftp.afn.org/pub/MacPPP at no cost.
The Macintosh package was assembled and tested by Rick Q. Chin and Allen Papapetrou.
The following are links to local and remote sites with software that may work with SLIP/PPP. We do not support any of this software yet. Do not expect AFN volunteers to help you configure any of this stuff. In general, you should be able to find documentation with the packages to help you, or you might be ale to find more experienced AFN users willing to help out.
