1. Introduction The Windows 95 and Windows 98 operating system includes a modem program (called the Dial-Up adapter) that can establish network connections to the university's network and the Internet.  Through a network connection, software programs like Netscape Navigator, WS_FTP, and various email programs can communicate with other computers on the Internet.  If you want to install the Windows Dial-Up adapter and the networking software, follow the instructions in this handout. 2. Things You Need to Know Depending on what was included in your original Windows 95/98 installation, it will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete this document. Before you begin, make sure you have the following: 3. Install or verify the installation of the Dial-Up Networking components
  1. Press the Start button and then the options, Settings and Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, select the Windows Setup tab and then double-click the Communications component.
  4. In the Communications window, "Is DIAL-UP NETWORKING checked?"
    1. --YES--
    Click the Cancel button in the Communications window and the Cancel button in the Add/Remove Programs Properties window.
     
      --NO--
    1. Put a check in the DIAL-UP NETWORKING box.
    2. Press the OK button in the Communications window and press the OK button in the Add/Remove Programs Properties window.
    3. If you are prompted for the Windows 95 installation CD, place the CD inside the CD drive and follow the directions in the dialog box.

     
        At this point or later in another step, you may be asked to provide a computer name and workgroup name for your computer. The names can be up to 15 characters long. These names can be any name you want, we recommend for the workgroup name, "AFN services".
    1. If Windows 95 asks you to restart your computer, press the Yes button.
4. Install or verify the installation of the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP components 1. In the open Control Panel window, double-click the Network icon.

2. Does Dial-Up Adapter appear in the component's list?

--YES-- Go to question four (4). --NO-- a. Press the Add button and then double-click the component type, Adapter.

b. Scroll down the Manufacturer's list and select Microsoft.

c. Double-click the entry, Dial-Up Adapter from the Network Adapters list. You will return to the Network   window and the entry, Dial-Up adapter should appear in the component's list.
 

3. Does TCP/IP appear in the component's list? --YES-- Go to question five (5). --NO-- a. Press the Add button and double-click the component type, Protocol.
b. Scroll down the Manufacturer's list and select the entry, Microsoft.
c. Double-click the entry, TCP/IP from the Network Protocol list. You will return to the Network window and the entry, TCP/IP should appear in the component's list.
4. Double-click the entry, Dial-Up Adapter in the component's list. a. Select the Driver Type tab and select Enhanced mode (32 bit & 16 bit) NDIS driver (if not checked).
b. Select the Bindings tab and check the box beside TCP/IP.
c. Press the OK button to return to the Network window.
5. Double-click the entry, TCP/IP in the component's list. a. Select the WINS Configuration tab and select the Disable WINS Resolution option.
b. Press the OK button to return to the Network window.
6. Press the OK button in the Network dialog box.
7. If Windows 95 asks you to restart your computer, press the Yes button.

When your computer restarts you may be asked to provide a login name and password for your computer. We recommend that you enter any name you want but make sure that the password fields are empty (blank). If you respond in this manner, then you will not see this logon screen again.
 

5. Create a Connection shortcut 1. Close the Control Panel window (if still open).

2. Double-click the My Computer icon (on the Desktop) and the Dial-Up Networking folder. The Make New Connection wizard will automatically launch. If it does not, then double-click on the Make New Connection icon.

3. Enter a name for the connection shortcut. For example: AFN Dialup Service. Press the Next button.

4. If you're calling from an on-campus telephone, enter the telephone number: 9-334-0565. If you are calling from an off-campus telephone, enter the telephone number: 334-0565 If you are calling from long distance, the area code is: 352. Press the Next button.

5. Press the Finish button. A Connection shortcut for AFN Dialup Service should now appear inside the Dial-Up Networking folder.

6. Configure the Connection shortcut 1. With the RIGHT MOUSE button, click on the AFN Dialup Service connection shortcut and select the option, Properties.

2. Select the Server Types button or tab.

3. Press the TCP/IP Settings button. 4. Press the OK button in the TCP/IP Settings box.

5. Press the OK button in the Server Types dialog box. (May not be present depending on your version of Windows.)

6. Press the OK button in the Connection shortcut dialog box.

7. How to deactivate call waiting

If your phone has the Call Waiting feature, Windows 95 Dial-Up adapter requires that this feature be turned off. To turn off this feature while you are using the Dial-Up adapter, follow these instructions:
 

1. Double-click the My Computer icon (on the Desktop) and the Dial-Up Networking folder (If not open).

2. Double-click the AFN Dialup Services connection icon.

3. Press the Dial Properties button.

4. Check the box beside the option, This location has call waiting. To disable it dial: and enter the dialing code, *70, into the dial field.

5. Press the OK button in the Dialing Properties window and press the Cancel button in the Connect To window.

6. Close the Dial-Up Networking window and the My Computer window.
 
 

8. How to automate your connection shortcut

You can set your computer to automatically display the AFN Dialup Services connection window, whenever a program such as Netscape Communicator, Internet Explorer or any other Internet program attempts to access the Internet. To automate this function, follow these steps:
 

1. From your Windows Desktop, press the Start button and then select the options, Settings and Control Panel. This will open the Control Panel window.

2. In the Control Panel window, open the Internet Control panel.

3. Depending on which version of Windows you have the Internet Control Panel will display two different options.

a. In the first option, the AutoDial dialog-box will be present. i. Check the option, Use AutoDial.

ii. Select the option, AFN Dialup Services from the Dial-Up Networking connection list.

iii. Press the OK button to save your settings.

b. In the second option, the Connection option will be present. i. Press the Connection tab.

ii. In this box, select the option, Connect to the Internet using a modem and press the Settings button.

iii. In the Dial-Up Setting dialog-box, select the option, AFN Dialup Services from the Dial-Up Networking connection list. All other settings in this window are optional.

iv. Press the OK button to close the Dial-Up Setting dialog-box and press the OK button in the Internet Properties dialog-box to save your settings.

At this point, all of the software necessary to make a connection to the AFN network is installed. RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

9. How to dial in using the Connection shortcut

Every time you want to dial in and establish a network connection, follow these steps:
 

1. There are two ways to open the AFN Dialup Service connection window. 2. Enter your user name into the User name field.

3. Enter your password into the Password field.

4. Press the Connect button.

5. You will see a notification screen that will report your progress in connecting to the campus network. Your computer will be connected when a box counting off the seconds appears with a Disconnect button or a connection icon appears in the system tray next to the Time and Date field. It will appear as two computers connected by a line.

6. At this point, you can use any of the Internet programs installed on your computer such as Netscape Navigator, WS_FTP Limited and telnet.
 

When you are ready to disconnect from the AFN network:
  1. Close all Internet programs properly.

2. Press the Disconnect button. If you have an icon in the system tray, click the right-mouse button on the icon that looks like two computers connected by a line and select the option, Disconnect.

Do not disconnect before properly exiting from all other network client programs.

10. Troubleshooting checklist Before calling the AFN Help Desk for assistance, check to see if you have encountered one of the following error messages:
  1. The computer you're dialing into cannot establish a Dial-Up Networking connection. Check your password and then try again.

This error can be caused by one of the following mistakes:

2. Dial-Up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of Network protocols you specified in the Server type settings. Check your network configuration in the Control Panel then try the connection again.

This error is caused by a missing component or by a setting that is not checked. Go back over the following sections very carefully and then reboot (restart) your computer.

If the message above repeats after rebooting, follow these directions: a. Do not attempt this solution without the Windows 95 System CD.
b. Press the Start button.
c. Select Settings.
d. Select Control Panel.
e. Double-click the Network icon.
f. Select Dial-Up Adapter and press the Remove button.
g. Select TCP/IP and press the Remove button.

h. Press the OK button and restart the computer.  It is possible that your computer will display several error messages as it reboots.  Do not be alarmed by these messages. These error messages should disappear after completing steps "i" and "j".

i. Once the computer restarts, repeat the instructions in the section, Verify or install the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP components.  You may see more components added to your Network components list, leave these components alone.

j. Make sure to restart your computer after these changes.
 

3. The black screen will not go away.
11. How to find your Windows Installation files If you don't have a Windows Installation CD or diskette set, then check to see if the Windows Installation files are on your computer's hard drive. To search the hard drive for these files, follow these instructions:
  1. From your Windows Desktop, press the Start button and then select the options, Find, then Files and Folders. This will open a Find: All Files window.

2. In the Find window, enter into the Named field, the characters, cab and press the Find Now button. If your Window Installation files are on your hard drive, they will appear in a list of files in the window below.

3. Look for files that are named, win95_xx.cab or win98_xx.cab where xx is a number such as 02, 03, 04,.... You should see approximately 23 files named in this manner.

4. If you see these files, write down the name of the folder they are stored in and press the Close button in the top-right corner of the Find Window.

5. If you don't see these files, then your Windows Installation files are not on your computer's hard drive. We strongly recommend finding your Windows Installation CD or diskette set from your manufacturer.
