[Alachua Freenet] Dialup Instructions for MacOS and FreePPP

  1. Setting Up FreePPP

    FreePPP is the software that will allow you to dialup and get connected to AFN.

    1. Click on the FreePPP icon in the upper right hand corner. The icon looks like a telephone
    2. Choose FreePPP Setup.
    3. You will now need to add a new account. To do this click on the Setup Tab. If you do not see the Setup tab then click on the blue arrow. This will reveal the tabs.
    4. In the Setup tab, there is an option to create a new account. Click on it.
    5. In the new account creation window, click on the Account Tab
    6. Set the information as follows:
      • Name: AFN - New Dialup.
      • Username and Password should be left blank.
      • We will need to use a connection script so change the "Connect using" pull down to connections script and then click on "Edit Script"
      • The connections script is as follows:
        1. Username:
        2. \a
        3. Password:
        4. \p
        5. >
        6. ppp
      • Click Okay
    7. In the account creation Window click on the Dialup Tab and set as follows:
      • Area Code: 352
      • Phone Number: 334-0565
    8. Click on the Options tab of the account creation window and set as follows:
      • Domain: afn.org

  2. Setting up TCP/IP

    TCP/IP is what allows your "Internet" programs ie. Netscape and Eudora to communicate with computers on the Internet.

    1. Click on the Apple Menu items. This is the apple icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
    2. Choose Control Panels.
    3. You should see an item called "TCP/IP". Click on it and do the following:
      • Where it says "Connect via:" choose "FreePPP".
      • Where it says "Configure:" choose "Using PPP Server".
      • In the Name Server addr. area put in the following:
        • 128.227.163.15
        • 128.227.128.24
      • In the Search Domain area put: afn.org
    4. Click on File -> Close and click on save when asked.


  3. Using FreePPP

    Now that all the software is setup, you can get online. To do so follow these instructions:

    1. Click on the FreePPP icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen
    2. Choose FreePPP Setup.
    3. Where it says Connect to: Choose AFN - New Dialup.
    4. Click on the Connect button.
    5. When asked for username and password enter them in.
    6. You are now online.
