SLIP/PPP Homepage

This page (slip2.html) is old and is superseded by this page: www.afn.org/slip/.

Welcome to the AFN SLIP/PPP information page. This is the place to go for current information on the SLIP/PPP feed. It's a good idea to look here before running out and buying any software, so point people you know who are interested in SLIP/PPP to this page.

Current news about the AFN SLIP/PPP feed

7/15/95 - SLIP/PPP access is enabled on all of AFN's 72 phone lines.

What is SLIP/PPP and what does it mean to me?

SLIP and PPP are two communication protocols which allow a computer connected to a server via a serial line (such as a modem) to become a actual node on the internet. This allows you to run network applications on your home computer directly.

With a SLIP/PPP feed and the right software on your computer, you can not only run graphical web browsing software, you can also FTP files directly to your computer, store your mail on your coputer, and many other functions.

Alachua Freenet supports both SLIP and PPP access, as well as continuing to support the standard menu interface.

Limits and restriction to the SLIP/PPP access

You must be a registered AFN user to access SLIP/PPP. Telnet and rlogin access to hosts at the University of Florida is not permited. Alachua Freenet's IRC server does not allow connections via the SLIP/PPP feed due to ease of abuse.

The AFN Windows SLIP/PPP distribution

Alachua Freenet volunteer Bradley Spatz has put together an easy to install diskette which provides the AFN user with the basic tools to take advantage of SLIP/PPP.

The best way to get this software is to stop by the Alachua County Library District headquarters (downtown). For $1 you get a single 3.5" 1.44M diskette with the pre-configured software and a handout that describes the installation procedure. The $1 covers duplicating expenses.

The software is also available via anonymous FTP from ftp.afn.org under the /pub/wfn/ directory.

For more information, visit the WINSOCK Freenet Home Page.

The AFN MacOS SLIP/PPP distribution

The Macintosh SLIP/PPP diskette set is available at the Alachua County Public Library HQ (downtown Gainesville). There are 3 disks for those with high-density floppy drives, and 5 disks for those with double-density floppy drives. The cost of the sets are $1 per disk, to cover duplicating costs.

You can also FTP the packages if you wish from ftp.afn.org/pub/MacPPP at no cost.

The Macintosh package was assembled and tested by Rick Q. Chin and Allen Papapetrou.

Available software

The following links are to local and remote sites with software that may work with SLIP/PPP. We do not support any of this software yet. Do not expect AFN volunteers to help you configure any of this stuff. In general, you should be able to find documentation with the packages to help you, or you might be ale to find more experienced AFN users willing to help out.
