With elections at all levels, be sure to learn the issues and the candidates so you can make the best of choices of the right person for each respective office. And, make sure you exercise your privilege by voting in all the elections.
Speaking of elections, and a bit closer to home, we have three more meetings, July, August, and September, before our Annual Meeting and election of officers and directors for guiding the MBCA through the upcoming year. Be sure to give a lot of thought as to who can best serve to guide our organization into the future. We could use some fresh talent to serve as officers and directors. Step up and let it be known you're interested as this is not an exclusive club, we welcome fresh talent.
Recent Happenings . . .
Our June meeting was an evening meeting and we had an excellent attendance. Is this telling us something?
And, for a change, our July Fourth activities did not get rained out in our neighborhood. Hallelujah!
Future Happenings . . .
Remember, our monthly MBCA meeting will be this coming Wednesday, held at the usual time and place.
And the following week on Thursday, July 17th, we have the Melrose 4 County Campaign Rally for all area candidates in Melrose Heritage Park from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Come meet your area candidates and bring your neighbors.

Tommy Clay, President of Putnam Land Conversation Trust, Inc. outlined the funding of Putnam Land Conservancy (PLC) about two years ago. They have had activities in five areas around Putnam County. He discussed the challenges they have encountered launching this program. And, he noted theya re seeking volunteers. You may contact the PLC via their web-site at: http://www.putnamlandconservancy.org.
Heather Surrency spoke about activities of the Hawthorne Area Community Foundation (HACF) promoting the Hawthorne area. They sponsor the local "Farmer's Market" on Saturdays in downtown Hawthorne from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm from Spring through June. They take the summer off. Their newsletter announces area events. For more information, contact Becky Wheeler at (352) 481-4437.
Zane Greathouse of Greathouse Butterfly Farm told how they took the family farm and converted it into a commercial butterfly operation and shipping butterflies to everywhere imaginable. They are continuing to explore new ways to market butterflies and in turn market the area facilities. They are attracting tour groups from Central and North Florida. He discussed ways that Melrose businesses can benefit from the Greathouse Butterfly Farm activities. Melrose can now provide several levels of dining faclilities. If we could offer other outdoor activities and lodging, guests would be inclined to stay longer.
He showed slides of a couple of communities in Europe where the local citizens had butterfly murals painted on various buildings throughout the community. Imagine having beautiful butterfly murals on various buildings around Melrose. Then, we could hold an annual butterfly festival promoting Melrose and their butterflies.
We have established the "plein aire" paint-out each spring. It was suggested that perhaps a butterfly paint-out be considered.
For more information about butterflies, etc. contact the Greathouse Butterfly Farm at:
