Recreational resources are abound in the Hawthorne Area. With over 400 fresh water lakes some of the best fishing can be found. Most of these lakes afford clear water for swimming, boating, and skiing. All major lakes have public boat ramps. The Lochloosa Wildlife Conservation Area has set aside 10,333 acres for hunting. There is also an Alachua County Library branch in Hawthorne providing reference and reader services in person or by phone. It is a center for cultural enrichment activities for both young and old. The Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail, created through The Florida Rails To Trails Program, stretches 17 miles from the City of Gainesville's Boulware Springs Park through the Paines Prairie State Preserve and the Lockloosa Wildlife Management Area.
