Get Your Irish On Early!

On Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 8pm, the best of the best Irish
traditional recording artists and performers in the world will be in
Gainesville presenting a concert at the Florida School of Massage.

Why are they here? They are part of the Southeast Tional, an annual
gathering of workshops, concerts, and jam sessions. Tional, pronounced
"chunnel", is the Irish Gaelic word for "gathering" and is a standard
reference to such music assemblies.

The Southeast Tional is one of the largest Irish music workshops in the
United States. It began in Florida in 2002 when Gainesville uilleann
piper and multi-instrumentalist John Maze joined forces with Orlando
piper Kathleen Cavanaugh to bring together the otherwise isolated
uilleann pipers across the Southeast in one place to learn under master
musicians. The Irish uilleann pipes are considered one of the most
complex and difficult instruments in the world. Since then, the Tionol
has grown, increasing the number of instructors, broadening the range of
instruments concerned, and alternating between various cities in the
Southeast U.S.

This year the Tional is back in Gainesville with an elite lineup of five
instructors, all of whom will perform in the Tional Concert at the
Massage School on March 10. The Tionol Concert provides the general
public a rare opportunity to hear traditional Irish music performed live
by true master artists of the genre.

The line-up of performers includes:
- Jerry O'Sullivan - arguably the most famous Irish-American uilleann
piper alive today.
- Michael Cooney - from County Tipperary, is one of the most vibrant
Irish pipers now residing in the U.S.
- Willie Kelly – expert Irish-American fiddler from New York who plays
in the mellifluous County Clare style.
- Siobhan Kelly – originally from County Clare, Kelly is one of the most
influential Irish flute players in the U.S.
- Tim Collins - from Sliabh Luachra (which straddles Limerick, Kerry,
and Cork) Collins is one of the globe's best and most prolific
concertina
players.

Tickets are $15 at the door, or can be reserved by calling or email Tional
founder and organizer John Maze at 352.505.6840 or
maze@ufl.edu. More
information can be found at the Tional website:
www.southeastpipersclub.org

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, the event will be without question
North Central Florida's most prestigious and rewarding Irish traditional
music performance of the year, barring none!

The Florida School of Massage is located at 6421 SW 13th Street
Gainesville, FL 32608

Area Irish step dancers, in both the balletic soft-shoe and percussive
hard-shoe styles, will provide guest appearances throughout the Concert.
A rousing 5pm Ceili dance precedes the concert, and the Ceili's cost,
which is separate from the Concert admission fee, is five dollars.
"Ceili", pronounced "kay-lee", is a traditional style of social dances
very comparable to group dances such as American squares and contras.
No experience or partner is necessary to participate, and all musical
accompaniment is live.

The dances will be called by Allison Hogan, TCRG – the Gainesville
area's only certified Irish dance master and former world championship
competitor. The Ceili is sponsored by both the Hogan School of Irish
Dance and Inisheer Irish Dance Company.
