Environmental Groups:
Earth First!: A nineteen-item gopher directory, with pieces on current threats to the Earth and who is causing them, as well as info on what Earth First! is.
Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal: "Are you tired of namby-pamby environmental groups? Are you tired of overpaid corporate environmentalists who suck up to bureaucrats and industry? Have you become disempowered by the reductionist approach of environmental professionals and scientists? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Earth First! is for you."
Greenpeace: Greenpeace is a non-violent protest and action organization concerned with nuclear disarmament, preservation of oceans and forests, abatement of toxic waste. Some of their recent activities, including their apparent participation in a whaling operation, bring their credibility into question.
The Nature Conservancy: "Among enviromental organizations, we fill a unique niche: preserving habitats and species by buying the lands and waters they need to survive."
National Wildlife Federation: "National Wildlife Federation's main goal is to raise awareness and involve people of all ages in their fight to conserve and protect the environment." Sections for kids, in the classroom, on campus.
National Parks and Conservation Association: "The NPCA is America's only private nonprofit citizen organization dedicated soleley to protecting, preserving, and enhancing the U.S. National Park System."
Environmental Defense Fund: EDF works with polluters to arrive at solutions that are economically feasible and environmentally responsible. Site features a number of provocative news stories.
Conservation International: "Conservation International uses science, economics, policy, and community involvement to promote biodiversity conservation in rainforests and other endangered ecosystems worldwide."
Sierra Club: "The Sierra Club is a non-profit member supported, public interest organization that promotes conservation of the natural environment by influencing public policy decisions- legislative, administrative, legal, and electoral."
Free The Planet!: "Free The Planet! seeks to build support for strong environmental protection, to empower the next generation of environmental leaders, and to revitalize the political core of the environmental movement." Membership base is students and young people.
Friends of the Earth: "Friends of the Earth has worked for conservation and public health protection for more than a quarter of a century. In the process, we have learned to focus on the underlying social and economic causes of environmental problems both at home and abroad."
Natural Resources Defense Council: "The Natural Resource Defense Council's purpose is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends."
Project Earth: A collection of timely articles on the environmental crisis are provided in the hopes that each viewer will pass the info on to others who will pass it on to still others, &c., a concept known as "exponential networking."

American Rivers: "American Rivers is a national conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring America's river systems and to fostering a river stewardship ethic. The organization was founded in 1973 to expand the number of rivers protected by the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System."
Ocean Voice International: "Ocean Voice International works for harmony between people, marine life and the environment. It is environmental, humanitarian and global in its concerns. Ocean Voice works through education, training, research, appropriate technologies and partnerships."
The Coral Reef Alliance: "CORAL is an independent, non-profit membership organization that works to address the worldwide problem of coral reef destruction. We focus on educating divers and the general public about the problems facing coral reefs, and also provide funding and technical support for coral reef conservation around the world."
The Thoreau Institute: "Inspired both by Henry David Thoreau's love of the natural world and his dislike of big government, the Thoreau Institute seeks ways to protect the environment without regulation, bureaucracy, or central control."
World Conservation Monitoring Centre: "WCMC provides information services on the conservation and sustainable use of the world's living resources, and helps others to develop information systems of their own." Tremendously valuable conservation databases.
Bioneers: "Restoring the Earth is destined to become the central enterprise of the years ahead, and leading the effort is a growing movement of "Bioneers," biological pioneers who are using nature to heal nature. The Bioneers bring practical solutions for virtually all our crucial environmental problems."
Earth Council: "The Earth Council is an international non-governmental organization created in 1992 as a direct result of the Earth Summit. Our mission is to support and empower people in building a more secure, equitable and sustainable future."
Earth Pledge Foundation: "EPF is a non-profit foundation which recognizes appropriate intersections between business interests and environmental, social, and cultural concerns. The Foundation builds mutually beneficial partnerships between these often competing forces by encouraging economic growth through the development of sustainable practices."
Worldwatch: "The Worldwatch Institute is dedicated to fostering the evolution of an environmentally sustainable society--one in which human needs are met in ways that do not threaten the health of the natural environment or the prospects of future generations."
The Wilderness Society: "Since 1935, The Wilderness Society has been protecting wild places. We are in the halls of Congress passing legislation. We are in courtrooms stopping harmful development. We are in classrooms teaching young people about what they own."

Arbor Day Foundation: "The National Arbor Day Foundation is involved in much more than just Arbor Day celebrations around the world. Its mission is to help promote tree care and conservation and to educate people on tree issues."
Native Forest Network: "Mission: To protect the world's remaining native forest be they temperate or otherwise, to ensure they can survive, flourish and maintain their evolutionary potential."

Animal Protection Groups:
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: The premiere organization of its kind in the United States, the ASPCA does more than run animal shelters. Info on animal rights advocacy, humane law enforcement, public policy efforts that promote animal welfare.
Humane Society of the United States: "The HSUS was founded in 1954 to promote the humane treatment of animals and to foster respect, understanding, and compassion for all creatures. Today our message of care and protection embraces not only the animal kingdom but also the Earth and its environment."
Save the Whales: Dedicated to education about marine mammals and their preservation. Includes pages on current oceanographical research, whale watching, marine mammal inventory, adopt a whale, and more.
Save the Manatee Club: "The purpose of SMC is to promote public awareness and education; fund manatee research, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts; and lobby for the protection of manatees and their habitat. The Adopt-A-Manatee program is the primary source of funding for SMC."
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals: "PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment." Sections on companies that do and do not test on animals, vegetarian cooking, fact sheets on a number of topics, more.
National Audubon Society: Founded originally to protect birds from the plume trade, today the Audubon Society addresses the ever more complex threats to birds that are presented by the modern world. A nice section on the art of John James Audubon.
International Wildlife Coalition: The IWC lists its objectives thus: Prevent cruelty to wildlife. Prevent killing of wildlife. Prevent the destruction of wildlife habitat.
Defenders of Wildlife: Defenders of Wildlife focuses primarily on the issues of species extinction and habitat alteration and destruction. Sections on Grassroots Activism, the Endangered Species Act, Wolf Update, and more.
Ark Trust: "The Ark Trust, Inc. is a national, non-profit animal protection organization devoted to raising public awareness about the vast spectrum of animal issues. Our primary focus is to promote extensive and positive coverage of animal topics by the major media."
Compassion Over Killing: "Compassion Over Killing is a national animal rights activist network. Our main function is organizing protests against animal exploiters such as furriers and fast food restaurants (to give two examples)."
Endangered Species Program: "Protecting endangered and threatened species and restoring them to a secure status in the wild is the primary objective of the endangered species program of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior."
Friends of Animals: "Founded in 1957, Friends of Animals is a U.S. headquartered, international, non-profit membership organization working to protect animals from cruelty and abuse. Today, we are one of the most respected activist groups in the nation and around the world."
Animal Liberation Frontline Information Service: "These pages are intended to provide an on-line information service dedicated to the activities of the animal liberation movement in Europe, North America and World-Wide." "What the service does is provide information about the 'underground' groups and individuals that are labeled by the mainstream as 'extreme,' 'terrorist,' etc."
Fund for Animals: "The Fund for Animals, at any given time, maintains numerous campaigns to end cruelty to animals in all its varied forms. World Society for the Protection of Animals: "With offices around the world, WSPA specializes in disaster relief, humane education, international campaigns and hands-on projects in those countries where the term 'animal protection' is seldom heard."
International Fund for Animal Welfare: "Our mission is to promote and ensure the just and kind treatment of animals as sentient beings. It includes improving the quality of the lives of animals and their environment, preserving animals from extinction, preventing and abolishing animal cruelty..."
Feminists for Animal Rights: "Because exploitation of women and animals derives from the same patriarchal mentality, FAR attempts to expose the connections between sexism and speciesism whenever and wherever we can. Cruelty-Free Value Fund: "Beacon Global Advisors has created the Cruelty-Free Value Fund with an investment portfolio intended to exclude those companies that employ animal testing in their product development, that endanger species of animals, sponsor inhumane animal events, or are subsidiaries of companies involved in these activities."
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society: "The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is a non-profit non-governmental organization (NGO) involved with the investigation and documentation of violations of international laws, regulations and treaties protecting marine wildlife species."
Sea Turtle Restoration Project: "The Sea Turtle Restoration Project fights to protect endangered sea turtles in ways that make cultural and economic sense to the communities that share the beaches and waters with these gentle creatures."
Farm Sanctuary: "Farm Sanctuary is an American non-profit organization dedicated to ending the exploitation of animals used for food production. Since Farm Sanctuary began in 1986, we have devoted our resources and time to exposing, and stopping, the cruel practices of the 'food animal' industry."
World Society for the Protection of Animals: "WSPA has been campaigning for 40 years to protect all animal life. Working with over 300 member societies in more than 70 countries, WSPA has the most widespread animal protection network in the world. WSPA has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and the Council of Europe."
National Anti-Vivisection Society: "Since its founding in 1929, NAVS has promoted greater compassion, respect and justice for animals through educational programs based on respected ethical and scientific theory and supported by extensive documentation of the cruelty and waste of vivisection."
United Poultry Concerns: "United Poultry Concerns is a non-profit organization which addresses the treatment of chickens and other domestic fowl in food production, science, education, entertainment and human companionship situations, promoting the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl and a healthy lifestyle."
Animal Legal Defense Fund: "Founded in 1981, ALDF is the country's leading animal rights law organization working nationally to defend animals from abuse and exploitation. ALDF's network of over 700 attorneys is dedicated to protecting and promoting animal rights."
Born Free Foundation: "Born Free aims to stop cruelty, especially to captive wild animals, to conserve wild animals in their natural habitat, and to ensure the long-term survival of species while recognising the needs of people." The organization was founded by ‘Born Free’ movie stars Virginia McKenna and her husband, the late Bill Travers.
Farm Animal Reform Movement: "FARM campaigns for the rights of farmed animals, promotes wholesome plant-based eating, and encourages environmental consciousness." FARM's national programs include The Great American Meatout, World Farm Animals Day, and National Veal Ban Action.
Humane Farming Association: "HFA's goals are to protect farm animals from cruelty, to protect the public from the dangerous misuse of antibiotics, hormones, and other chemicals used on factory farms, and to protect the environment from the impacts of industrialized animal factories."
In Defense of Animals: Originally organized to combat abuse at animal research facilities, In Defense of Animals has grown to be "...one of the nation's foremost animal advocacy organizations dedicated to ending institutionalized abuse of animals by defending their rights, welfare and habitat."
The Nature of Wellness: "Our mission: To inform the public about the medical and scientific invalidity of animal experimentation and testing..."
The Animal Lobby, Inc.: "The Animal Lobby, Inc. is an animal rights organization dedicated to instilling, in the attitudes of man, respect for all living creatures. The Animal Lobby is the voice and the family of the victims of cruel pounds, animal research dealers, filthy rich animal shelters, puppy mills, and individual cruelty of the worst kind."
World Animal Net: "World Animal Net was established in 1997 to improve communication and co-ordination between the world's animal protection groups on target campaigns, using rapidly developing communication technology." The Great American Meatout: "Each March, caring folks in one thousand communities in all 50 states and several Canadian provinces launch a revolution in American dietary habits." Recycling Hotline: A directory of recycling centers nationwide. Type in your zip code and what you want to recycle (antifreeze, scrap metal, office paper, whatever) and get the location of the nearest facility.
Recycler's World: This is an astounding recycling info database with sections for every conceivable category of recyclable material. Each section includes links to associations, facilities, even publications concerned with recycling in that category.
The Internet Consumer Recycling Group: "This recycling guide provides a starting point for consumers in the USA and Canada searching the Net for recycling information. The information is for regular folks with regular household quantities of materials to recycle. The goal is to help make recycling so easy and automatic that it blends into the flow of everyday life."
Zero Waste America: "Zero Waste, Inc. was founded to promote "zero waste" practices in laws and regulations, at home, school, and work. We supply research and analysis of waste issues. We also provide consumer, health, legal, and activist information."
Zero Population Growth: "ZPG is the nation's largest grassroots organization concerned with the impacts of rapid population growth and wasteful consumption." Info on problems connected with population growth, plus the very cool "How to Contact Your National and State Legislators" page.
Organic Gardening Links: A good starting place for info on composting, gardening, healthy and environmentally sound living, though you may find it a wee bit commercial in nature.
The Compost Resource Page: A wealth of Web resources related to a number of aspects of composting. Sections include home composting, vermicomposting, large-scale composting, composting toilets, even composting-inspired poetry.
Energy and Environment: "This homepage is designed to provide a broad introduction to the environmental implications associated with energy production and consumption. Internet links to federal agencies, electronic journals, private groups and search indexes are included in order to supplement and expand the information provided."
Nuclear Information and Resource Service: "NIRS is the information and networking center for citizens and environmental organizations concerned about nuclear power, radioactive waste, radiation, and sustainable energy issues."
Pesticide Action Network North America: "Pesticide Action Network North America is a nonprofit citizen-based NGO that advocates adoption of ecologically sound practices in place of pesticide use. League of Conservation Voters: The LCV is the "bipartisan political arm of the environmental movenent." Check out the National Environmental Scorecard, an annual report on how Congress votes on environmental issues.
Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide: "E-LAW is a network of public interest attorneys, scientists, and other advocates around the world who support each other's work by exchanging legal and scientific information to defend the environment in their home countries. E-LAW has offices in twenty countries and a large network of attorneys in many other countries around the world."
