Mike Grell
Mike Grell became a fan favorite in the 70's for his Neal Adams-inspired
work on books such as Warlord, Green Lantern/Green Arrow,
and Legion of Super-Heroes. Writing and illustrating
his own creation, the Warlord, Mike really stimulated the interest
of the fans and turned in some of his most beautiful work. Over
the years he's developed a storytelling style all his own.
And if anything, his art has become more detailed and beautiful with
the passing years.
- Warlord #2 pp.2/3: One of Mike
Grell's trademarks on Warlord was an opening double page splash on
pages two and three of each issue. When you consider how much impact
a regular splash makes, you can see that Mike hit you extra-hard with those
double page splashes. This particular piece was the very first double
page splash he drew for the book. It's done on one large sheet of
bristol board and is very clearly marked at the top: Do not cut apart.
Mike colored the piece with watercolors after it sold at a Chicago
Comicon charity auction. (Inks and Watercolors: Mike Grell)
