We hope to facilitate the exchange of info, strategy against this very real threat to our way of life. Local governments, notably big cities such as New Orleans, Chicago and Philadelphia, are teaming up with unscrupulous law firms, many of of whom were involved in the tobacco lawsuits, to launch another legal war against the manufacturers of firearms. Why? Well, some of the answers are provided by some of the proponents of the lawsuits listed below. Truly, we are awash in a sea of contemptuous litigation, and the tobacco and now the gun lawsuits are taking us to an unprecedented level of contemptuous litigation. The Spokane Spokesman-Review hit the bullseye when it proclaimed the lawsuits nothing more than a "cynical grab for undeserved money."
The situation reminds me of the hilarious prank calls that the infamous Jerky Boys team made to lawyers' offices. One of them would act as a confused old man or a young smartmouth and call a lawyer pretending to have been in a wreck that they caused, demanding to sue the victims, the toll booth authority, the lawyer himself, or simply to "sue everybody." In other words, sue anyone that wasn't responsible for the accident. In many of the calls the lawyer would ask to see if the caller could come to the office for a consultation, even after hearing these absurd stories. Unfortunately, the practices that made lawyers the butt of such humor have expanded to make entire industries the target of frivolous litigation.
Now we learn that the NAACP is considering joining the feeding frenzy against gun manufacturers. You have to wonder what kind of direction this organization is headed in, since they've also been lobbying to restore voting rights to convicted felons.
Read my March 3 letter in the Gainesville Sun.
I was recently contacted by the webmaster of LawyersGunsandMoney.Com. They have an excellent site with a very nice rogues gallery of lawyers involved in this action. They urge you, as I do, to contact mayors' offices nowto voice your opposition to the suits. Remember to be polite when communicating. Who knows, the person answering the phone may even be on our side.
The Second Amendment Foundation is planning a countersuit against the cities that sue gun manufacturers. Read the details here.
Darryl Rowe suggests:
All gun manufacturers should IMMEDIATELY cease shipping their product to all city/state governmental agencies involved in this ridiculous action as well as terminate all product support and warranty work and training to and for the involved city and state governmental agencies.
Sales to private individuals may continue, but nothing is to be honored on police purchase orders, etc.
Let them stew in their own juices.

James Neufeld suggests:
Yesterday the at U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting it was decided that various municipalities would assail the firearms industry independently with all resources on a local or state level as opposed to a unified suit. It would seem to me that this constitutes a conspiracy by government entities to destroy an entire industry by the weight of malicious litigation. Doesn't this constitute a felonious conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce and therefore possibly actionable under RICO statutes? This would have the potential for treble damages. Given that RICO was written with an eye toward facilitating maximum abuse of the law, it might be a good idea to see how WE can (ab)use it to the detriment of our enemies.

"I know the business community considers us a bunch of vultures who just got done with one corpse and are looking for another," Kerrigan said. "But the truth is that tobacco had to pay in no small measure because of what we did." - Washington Post. Jan. 5, 1999
In other words, "Your wallet, please!"

Wendell Gauthier
New orleans trial lawyer and evil Gauleiter behind the Castano
Group of tobacco litigants. In October, the City of New Orleans filed suit
against various gun manufacturers, claiming that the lack of safety
devices preventing unauthorized users from firing the guns
resulted in deaths. He is presently getting other vultures, uh trial
lawyers, to chip in hundreds of thousands on the "get the gunmakers"
scheme. Tell him what you think of this: whg@gauthier-downing.com

Alex Penelas
Shyster/Frat Boy/Mayor of Miami-Dade (look, it's supposed to be called
Dade
County)
One of the biggest proponents of the gun lawsuits (see related articles
above). A truly ugly individual who always tries to look pretty. Never
having met a photo-op he didn't like, this slickmeister loves to pose with
children, seniors etc. to prove he cares. He took every opportunity he
could after Hurricane Andrew to grab media exposure for himself and his
"good deeds." An urban snob, Penelas represents the worst of what America
has to offer. Some of my friends from South Florida knew him and they
tell me Alex has always has been a pure opportunist. And what better
opportunity to pick our pockets to finance his social activism than the
gun lawsuits. At least he is living his dream - as a career politician.
Send him fan mail: Alex Penelas'
